Leading through Charisma

Tonight on Charlie Rose they had a re-broadcast of a June episode featuring the author Jim Collins, who's selling a book called "Good to Great", based upon businesses with charismatic leaders. Leaders in "good" to "great" companies. It was one of those episodes where the person is vibrant and interesting...not some self-promoting actor.

The interview was interesting because you couldn't help but think of Steve Jobs and his role with Apple. One of the issues Jim covered was the leader whose celebrity is what carries the company, like a dictator carries a nation. When some charismatic leaders leave, the company hasn't built a structure that can survive their passing. He discussed Lee Iacocca's leadership arc, and how the company was in decline near the end of his term with Chrysler.

Apple certainly fits into this pattern....I wonder if they mention the company in the book....huh, Charlie just said that the book's been out for a year.

He cited what are called the "Level Fives" - the five is ambitious, first and foremost for the cause the company and the work, not for themselves. They have the will to make good with their efforts. These are the people who sit back and lead without grabbing the attentions for themselves.

I don't think that Steve fits this state, at least in our minds. Steve seems to enjoy the limelight a bit more than this "level five" designation.

Anybody else watch this episode?

Anybody watch anything other that Scooby Doo on this board?
