The Twisted Pyschology of post-counts
So what is it about post-counts that causes such a ruckus? I mean, do people really give a shite one way or another?
Back in the day we used to have not only post-counts but membership status based on post counts. That went out the window because people spammed to get higher statuses. Then AI went down and came back again, and we still had post counts, but everybody was a "member". Now we don't even have post counts anymore. Probably because some genius like mika made a snide comment about people with more than 700 posts as being "losers", which once more got people thinking about something they shouldn't have been thikning about.
I say bring em back for posterity. Sometimes they're good converstion starters.

besides, they're kind of pointless with only a two tiered system anyway. you're either a member or non member.
The point is that there are some people who *do* think they need higher post counts. That's okay. Contribute some meaningful discussion and your post count will rise. Spamming the boards, on the other hand, is not okay. Some people clearly make extra post for that sole reason. Why? Is it an ego thing? I don't know.
What I do know is that is is a practice that wastes the server's resources and annoys several members. What are the ramifications of ending the post count-rising spam nonsense? Little Billy gets upset that all his spam was for nothing.
There is a reason that AppleInsider exists. It is for the discussion of computers, technology, and a bit of philosophic chatter about the real world.
AppleInsider was NOT made for spam. Posting nonsense like "this sandwich ain't half bad" qualifies as spam, AFAIAC.
This server costs money and I seriously doubt the higher-ups would care to continue paying for it should this kind of behavior continue or escalate.
Brad, I hate you sig. How came ?
in reference to the all mighty scott ?
Oh gee !

looks like some sort of nazi regime to me...
Just leave the dang post count will ya!!!!

...or EmAn.
Trolls are easy to spot because they usually have extremely low post counts.
Someone with inside info may have a low post count.
Now when I look at an unfamiliar name I don't know if that person is a regular or a newbie.
Do post counts actually increase Server loads directly?
I think they're rather harmless.
I suppose I should also add that AppleInsider is *not* a democracy. For all intents and purposes, it is a strict dictatorship. If you don't like the way we handle things, go elsewhere.

Moogs wasn't criticizing you guys (although you deserve it). The culture of this place is absolutely shot, and it's because of the administration of the boards.
Yes, you can do whatever you want. But I'd think you'd want AI to be a place that people enjoy. Apparently some of you see it just as a place to push your weight around, insult the members, remind them incessantly that they can leave, and tell them they better behave or their poor conduct will meet with repercussions.
And about the "right to leave," have you noticed that many have left, and many have checked the place out and apparently decided not to return?
BTW, I don't blame you. I (among others I'm sure) nominated you to be a mod. But the culture among you people is awful right now. You seem to go out of your way to confront and piss off members and remind us of your power. Just chill out.
Oh, and I like the post counts removed.
of course, keep that rate up for a day or so and yes, it does affect the server and bandwidth.
Here's the deal... yes, when AI came back I cared about my post count. For the past few months I really haven't cared. Do I mention my posts from time to time? Yes. I just joke around about it though. I really don't give a damn about the stupid post counts. Trust me, having a high post count isn't the greatest thing in the world.
Just had to get that off my chest

I just figure it should be a few days at most because of how much I've been posting lately, that's it
