To buy or not to buy (a new powermac)???

Okay. Here's my thing. I need a new system at home and my girlfriend (who i live with) is also aching for a new mac. The g3 400 tower is getting buggy, feels slow and isn't quite up to the task of burning dvds.

I can buy a new midrange system right now with all the trimmings, or i can wait a bit longer and see if MWSF has anything to offer.

I'm looking for realistic suggestions here - do i wait for the vapourmac g5 or get a really decent system now.

What are the real chances that Apple is going to release a whole new super powered chip in the next 6 months - 1 year. Couldn't they just keep nudging up the g4 in small increments?

Well, how much do you need it? And what do you need to do with it? Usually, the time right after a new product is introduced is the best time to buy because you won't have the rug pulled out from under you, but if you can wait until MWSF, why not?

Also, what exactly do you need to do with it? Could you get away with getting an iMac instead, or do you really need the expandability/power of a new PowerMac system?

You may want to get a nice, powerful used system. Dual 800s should be pretty cheap now that dual 867s with DDR are only $1700. A dual 800 will absolutely SMOKE any iMac you can buy today, and you'll be able to upgrade it down the line also.

Mostly illustration and graphic design, though i'm doing increasing amounts of video and want a system i can master professional DVDs and do some compositing on - after effects mostly, not too much 3d.

Well, I've been waiting a while. I feel like i keep getting my hopes up for something spectacular, and then end up waiting again. the machine at home is in grim shape, i'm running out of patience to fix it, i use a dp 533 at work and a laptop both running osx. I want a home system that is stable and fast and going to last a good 3 or 4 years.

I'm really wondering how likely people think it is that Apple will REALLY upgrade the powermac line in the next year or so. If I see compelling reasons to wait, I can wait. But if the so-called g5 is another 2 years off, i'd rather buy a good system now and sell it to buy a newer one later.

    Know what I mean?

regarded used stuff: I'd rather spend the extra cash on a new machine with a full warranty and a longer life span. I like the imac, but i have several hard drives i need for video and i have no intentions of buying external firewire cases for all of them. the noise alone would drive me nuts, nevermind the cabling.

I'd got for a Power Mac now. If you keep waiting you'll never get anything.
