Iphone5 screen bulging

Hello, I have this iPhone 5 which is a few years old, like 4 or 5. Yesterday I noticed there is coming light out of the top left corner, from above the mute button. It seems like the screen is bulging approx half through my phone. The touch screen is fine and working. The phone doesn't overheat.

I have read that it may be issue with the battery, but not sure. Because I have dropped the phone multiple times on floor (I have a case on my phone)

Should I be concerned about possible battery malfunction? Possible that phone may set on fire or explode because of this? Or it is just screen displacement which I dont have to worry about long as the screen works? I can't get to repair before like in few days now.

You should be very concerned about a battery malfunction.  Lithium batteries have a terrible tendency to swell before possibly bursting and igniting in a nasty and energetic fire.

You can buy the tools necessary to open an iP5 and a replacement battery on eBay for very little.  I did this and replaced the battery in a 5 with no trouble.  If you aren't very handy, hand the phone, battery and tools to the nearest available teenager.  There are youtube videos and ifixit and similar pages with guides on exactly what to do.

I would'nt carry it unless it was in a metal box, personally.

Not the same situation, but just to illustrate what a Li-ion battery can do.

There was a battery replacement program for the 5, you might want to check if your's qualifies: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/
