Some general questions about DVD-RAM

Okay, I asked some general questions about DVD-RAM drives a while ago, and now I've actually bought a computer with a DVD-RAM drive. It's not here yet, but I'm interested in learning a bit about what I can and can't do with the drive before I go out and buy a $10 or $20 disk.

I read up on it and it appears that DVD-RAM is meant to be highly rewriteable (100,000 times), and it also allows random access, meaning you can drag things on and off it like a Zip or floppy, whereas a CD-RW has to be written and rewritten all at once. This seems like it'd be good for transferring between computers with DVD drives, and even more for backing up data. Is there any software needed? Is it compatible with iDVD, and can I make playable movies on a DVD-RAM disk? Thanks for any help.

Not compatible with iDVD. Many DVD-ROMs have trouble reading DVD-RAM discs too.

So pretty much backup only? Well, better than nothing.
