sync and backup local and cloud files on desktop, laptop

I have a desktop iMac for my main computer and a laptop (12” MacBook) for travel. I want to keep files between the two in sync. The easiest way to do that, it seems, would be to put all my documents in Dropbox and work from there. But:
— if my files are in Dropbox, with no local copy, how would I back them up? It doesn’t seem safe to rely only on Dropbox’s servers
— often  when I travel, I temporarily do not have reliable access to either wi-fi or cellular. So then I need a local copy on my laptop - but coordinating any changes with the desktop or Dropbox version(s) gets messy.

Right now I’m  backing up my desktop to a physical hard drive, and my laptop to Code42 in the cloud.

It seems between iCloud and OS X Sierra’s built-in storage management I should be able to work something out - but iCloud in general doesn’t seem to work as well as Dropbox, and I don’t know whether to trust Sierra’s built-in storage management.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
