Is LDAP useful anymore?

It looks like LDAP is fairly well restricted to universities and businesses these days. Is this directory protocol a dead duck?

I've been looking for a good LDAP server to plug into the directories section of Jag's Address Book is the reason I've come to this conclusion.

Not sure how something "restricted" to universities and businesses could be considered not useful. The last several companies I have worked for use LDAP extensively, simplifying everything from e-mail access to intranet browsing.

Obviously I'm not the target audience for this feature, as I'm no longer in college and don't work in a corporate environment. I just seem to recall Bigfoot and 411 having open LDAP directories awhile back....I suppose the people search feature in Sherlock 3 is for that general search task and the directories function in Address Book is for people who work in the aforementioned environments.

Is that the way LDAP works?
