Keep @mac.com e-mail?
Is there any way to keep my @mac.com e-mail w/o upgrading to a .Mac membership. I don't want the iTools or backup or anything like that, just the e-mail.
Hell, I can do without that too, but it would be nice if it just didn't get shut down.
Anybody know?

The best way round it if you want to keep your mac.com address is to pay a friend who has upgraded $10 + tax a year to add it to her/his account.
You get 100 free kodak prints with the purchace of .mac right now. It is just enough insentive to make me take the dive. I have yet to pay, but the more i think about it the more i think that it is worth the $50 (for this year at least). Are there any .mac users out there have experiences to share (good or bad)?

The prints are certainly a bargain, so long as you were intending to get prints anyway.
I upgraded for three reasons:
1. Too many people use my mac.com e-mail address to change it (Have you noticed that whenever you send out a change-of-e-mail-address message, nobody, but nobody pays any attention?)
2. It's very useful having a 15MB IMAP e-mail account. I love IMAP, and actually shift mails back and forward from my computer to the account in case I may need them while I'm away.
3. I was already paying more than $99 for an online backup service. iDisk may not be so secure, but I keep encrypted copies of my important files, and the Backup software provided with .mac makes sure that a copy is backed up to a remote site (My iDisk) every evening.
Sunday or Monday, the LAST possible day. Actually, gonna kinda need it because of an upcoming move and I'll have a different ISP/e-mail soon.
I would like to maintain my pscates@mac.com and I just got an e-mail from Apple this morning reminding me that my $49.95 window is closing.
also, i don't like zo66 anymore but my full firstlastname@mac.com seems a bit long
agh... damn you Apple. I dont really NEED .Mac but its gotten such an easy habit to host pics, sites, etc. grrrrrrr
If you let youname@mac.com die... does it become IMMEDIATELY available again on October 1st? I'd really like to get an address that was taken from day 1.
I tried emailing the person that has it for a month that I would like to but it from him/her but got no replies
but no credit card...

i want it basically for the mail.. could do as well without but i think it's cooler to have a mac.com email address than pay 100 $ for a pair of trousers etc...
hm, could that upgrade thing work for many people as well? so if there is ONE in AI who has paid it ... and upgrades it to some 20 accounts.. ?
i think its great.
to bad they didn't give us a free email account.
HI Guys,
I have a .MAC account(for the next 10 mos. at least) and I'm going to offer 5 piggyback accounts to any AI members.
I will sign up the first 5 members I hear(and recieve a check) from. $10 apiece.
Maybe I'm crazy to do this but......

if i get my firstnamelastname@mac.com account, then on Oct 1st get the email that I really want ( firstname@mac.com), it will cost me just 10$ to have it.
BUT... my homepage will be homepage.mac.com/firstnamelastname . At the end of my 1st year, will I be able to choose homepage.mac.com/firstname seeing that I bought that email address? Will it redirect automatically if I buy firstname@mac.com and tell people to visit homepage.mac.com/firstname?
Does this make any sense?

...Know exactly what you mean. I have a primary .Mac account and I bought a second mail only account for my wife. I checked into it (in case she wanted idisk space in the future), according to Apple, you can convert an email only account to a full .Mac account at any time. (as long as you pay)
With CD-R costing less than $1 ea., it seems a bit much to pay $100 per year for 100 MB of disk space. 100 MB isn't enough space for me to back up my data even if I wanted to back it up on some remote server I don't trust.

While you will lose any files or information, you will not lose the ability to keep your username. Former iTools usernames will be kept for an indefinite period of time allowing users to sign-up for .Mac for the foreseeable future and keep their email address.
In fact, you can still use your .Mac username as your iChat login even if you haven't paid for the service. You will not have access to email or other features of the service, but you can still monitor and change your iChat password using the .Mac Web site.
"Usernames will be available for reactivation indefinitely," said Hayashi. "After the deadline a customer may choose to sign-up for .Mac and reactivate their .Mac user name if they have their password, but they should not expect to get their data. Usernames will also continue to work for iChat even if a customer decides not to sign up for .Mac. Customers can manage their password for iChat through the .Mac web site."

DAMMIT. Does this mean that I CAN'T get the name thats already taken? Or is it like Hotmail that it keeps the defunct login that you can reactivate and if you are just someone that wants a new account, you can retake with new password?
This would really suck.. I want that other firstname@mac.com and Im almost 100% sure that that person doesn't use it. No homepage, no replies to multiple emails from me...
grrrrrr
