LPR VS IPP: Compare and Contrast them

Can someone tell me the basic differences between the LPR protocol and IPP? I think some people use the two like they mean the same thing. What about a history of the two? This would make a good discussion, since most of will be saying bye-bye to AppleTalk soon (if not already).



Also (more importantly), can anyone comment on the benifits of one protocol over the other?



I am trying to research how these 2 protocols fit into the OS X world, escecially with CUPS and Rendez-vous (Zero-config).
