First look: Lightweight Nike Sport Band is now sold separately from Apple Watch for $49

This week, Apple expanded the lineup of band options for Apple Watch owners, including the ability to buy the Nike Sport Band on its own. AppleInsider offers fitness-focused Apple Watch users a first look at the add-on accessory.

Announced by Apple on Tuesday, the new Nike Sport Band comes in "Anthracite/Black," "Pure Platinum/White," and "Black/Volt." Previously, the perforated bands were only available to users who bought a second-generation Nike-branded Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch Nike+ launched last year, a few months after Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 1 units became available. That means anyone who bought at launch --?or who has stuck with a first-generation Apple Watch --?could not buy the official Nike bands until this week.

The Nike Sport Band arrives in the same-style box as other Apple Watch bands, though the new partnered accessory includes Nike Plus branding on the box. It comes with both small/medium and medium/large sized strap lengths for users with different wrists sizes.

The lightweight band has a somewhat funky look with a practical purpose: A series of identically sized holes up and down the length of the band reduce its weight significantly. With less material, the Nike Sport Band is also far more flexible than the legacy sport band, which comes in the box with most new Apple Watch purchases.

As a result, the Nike Sport Band offers a number of options for athletes. Not only is it lighter and easier to put on, but the perforated design also allows spaces for skin to breathe and sweat to escape during a workout.

The separate Nike Sport Band is priced at $49 and is available to purchase now direct from Apple. It debuted alongside a series of new spring colors and styles for the Apple Watch, including six new shades of woven nylon for $49 apiece, seven new classic leather straps for $149 each, and two new additions to the Herm?s Leather collection for $489.

Glad the finally sold these separately. Nearly bought the knock offs on Amazon a few times. Glad I held out. Just ordered two off the Apple Store. Black 38mm for the wife and white 42mm for myself.

Thank goodness. I was going to take up running, but the sports band on my Apple Watch is so heavy that I can hardly move. Now I can get this new band and I'll be fit and thin in no time!

I guess I could check but am too lazy - is the Nike App now available generally or is it limited to those who buy either this band or the Nike branded watch?

The Nike+ RunClub app is available to download on the App Store and it runs as a native Apple Watch app, just as it does with the Nike+ Apple Watch. The only thing exclusive to the Nike+ Apple Watch hardware, at this point, are the custom watch faces, and small engraved Nike branding on the back of the watch. Considering the Nike+ Watch is priced identically to an Apple Watch Series 2, that seems fair.

it looks like the new black is slightly different from nike's first black band which had gray holes. also the white which they called flat silver white and gray versus now which they call platinum white — can anyone confirm this?

Seriously I never heard of anyone paying $50 for an $18 watchband. Apple could start a casino and charge $100 just to get in and lose your money, and the lines would be a round a dozen city blocks nearby.

$18? How do you get that value, not that I'm complaining because you people typically claim it's "35¢ worth of rubber" and other such nonsense.

I'd even say that $18 is likely much higher than what it cost to manufacture an accessory product being sold for $49.

Black with orange hole surrounds please. Even the copies aren't available in orange.

That's an excellent link, especially if you take into account that Apple has various lines and costs are distributed all over.
Costs for currently "low volume" items, which might be the Watch or the AppleTV or the linkband or the MacPro depending on your viewpoint are likely paid for through higher margins in other items. Excellent world coverage (there are so many Apple Stores nowadays) and tremendous customer support also are expenses that have a non-negligible cost... as DELL knows well.

Perhaps it's an artifact of the lighting, but in the 'hairy arm' photo above the black of the band doesn't appear to match that of the watch case.

The Apple bands is black and the Apple Watch case is Space Gray. Close, but not exact. Also, the texture of the surface affects the way it reflects light and yes, lighting plays a small role in that respect.

I don't care how much or how little it costs Apple to produce a watchband, Watch, phone, or computer. They  charge whatever they want, and I'm free to pay it or not, depending on what it's worth to me. How other people feel about paying a given price is irrelevant and inconsequential.

A few of my bands are third-party but most of them are Apple as theirs are much nicer than any third party knock-off I've seen. There are some nice unique third-party bands but very few in the area of knock-offs.

Respectfully, the band color (not the holes) is Anthracite, not true black. It's actually a very dark grey.
