No "inside info' here. just confident speculation. some clues are cited below.

&gt; PalmSource's CEO "was senior vice president at Apple Computer, where he led the worldwide research and development group responsible for Macintosh OS software, Macintosh hardware, imaging and other peripheral products. <a href="http://www.palm.com/about/corporate/executive.html"; target="_blank">link</a>

&gt; palm os 5 can now read .mov and quicktime files. (the os searches for these file types when flash memory is inserted.)<a href="http://oasis.palm.com/dev/kb/faq/2489.cfm#header"; target="_blank">link</a>

&gt; palm os followed apple's lead and supports 802.11b and bluetooth at sytem level making it more appealing to apple.

&gt; steve jobs wants to be sony. sony has the best palm pda on the market. steve has an inflated ego. steve wants to beat sony in the comp-sumer market. (to be honest, if i were to buy a pc ((heaven forbid)), i would get the <a href="http://www.vaio.net/mx_overview.htm"; target="_blank">sony vaio mx</a> and the clie if it was more mac friendly.)

&gt; the kicker ?&gt; the success of the iPod.

it's gonna happen. i'm hoping we'll no more by wednesday afternoon.

While I'd like to see an Apple PDA, it's not going to happen on Wednesday.

Not in this economic climate but perhaps at MWSF.

Jobs does have an ego, but he's learned alot from the Cube and even the latest iMac. Unless you can bring a product out with at a reasonable price point, don't do it. My guess is that any Apple's PDA would be heads and shoulders above everyone elses but so would the price.

No inside info...just confident speculation too.

I would rather see Apple build an OS X "lite" and a smart phone than have them license the Palm OS. I would imagine that this would also be more attractive to OS X developers. The main benefit of going with the Palm OS would be the amount of software that is already out there, but this could be offset by better OS integration, and Applescript automation of the Palm device.

I just bought an eMate 300, and despite it being 5 years old NewtonOS seem far in advance of PalmOS and WinCE.

It may well be fantasy, but if Apple released a PDA with updated hardware to make smaller/lighter, it would be the best PDA you can currently buy.

    NewtonOS 2.0 is pretty incredible.

If Apple does produce a PDA, it will be with it's own OS. And like JCG before me, I too think it will be a version of OS X. Why else would they have built in all this HW recognition stuff into the OS if it weren't true?

JCG I like the way you think but every time someone brings phone into the picture I cringe...

How may different cell phone systems do we have in the US?

Some phone only work with Verizon other only with Sprint others with AT&T other with VoiceStream then you have Europe standards (only one I think... and thank goodness) then Japan again only one I think... but I'm pretty sure Japan isn't the same as Europe.

Now having said all of that what would you have Apple choose to support...

If I'm wrong about this them please let me know but with the little I know about the technology (and I fully admit to knowing little and could be wrong) I don't see how Apple could enter that market.

Here in the UK we have 1 standard (GSM) over 2 frequencies 900/1800. Most modern handsets are dual or tri-band which helps.

In the US you have analog and digital, GSM and CDMA and lots of competing carriers. Apple could do really well here with a iPhone but there it would be a hardware nightmare!

And gadgets sell, I'd rather have 5 than 1 Apple ÚberGadget

Good points Dave. To answer your question, the service with the best overall coverage of the nation, and quality of that coverage.

If Apple were to create a new PDA (dream on... maybe in five years), it wouldn't be based off Palm OS; because Palm OS is nearly as behind as Windows CE is, compared to NewtonOS.

Nor would it be based off "OS X lite" - whatever that is (the fake screenshots I've seen from it so far are less intelligent than the average politician). OS X is quite a complex OS; to make a PDA OS out of that would take ages, and the result would be too different from OS X to call it just "OS X lite". It would be a lot more intelligent to improve NewtonOS, port some stuff over from OS X, and package that as "NewtonOS 3". Palm is doing the same with BeOS 5 and PalmOS 6.

Hey i sel cell phones, both verizon and sprint. They work on CDMA bands. when you look at one of their phones they are either dual or tri-mode phones. the dual are the analog 800mhz and cdma 1.9 ghz bands. tri-modes use an additional 800 mhz cdma band. all of these phones have either the same two or three chip sets depending on the phone. the thing is that voice stream and etc. buy the phones from people like samsung and then isolate the phone for their service. then they sell it to best buy and the like. if apple wanted to sell a phone they would really only need the dual mode phones. when sprint goes 3g in sept. their cdma band will switch automaticly. apple would really kick ass with them. integrate the iapps onto the phones. for example the upcoming N400 is suposed to be able to play mp3s, with a little extra camera, video confrencing, take pictures, attatch them to emails, full scale internet with flash etc., and have sustained connect speeds of 40-70 kbps with spurts of up to 120 - 150. IN SEPTEMBER!!! Think about it an apple phone with itunes, iphoto, and address book.

include a mini usb port instead of a hookup connection and that would be a serious phone. and they are not too expensive. the A460 which can do some of that stuff, is only $150.

oh well, one can only dream.

No way Apple would have a chance in the PDA market if they used their own OS. They've learned their lesson agains MS windows. It has always been and will continue to be about the applications. Palm OS has surpassed critical mass in available apps.

Would the iPod sell if it used it's own music format instead of the established MP3? Same idea.

Since the topic has moved to cellphones, here's the one I'm buying unless a miracle happens and Apple releases a competing product. I can hope can't I?

One thing that could work for Apple would be if they could get a fast enough processor to emulate a palm OS app in a window. Since the hardware requirements on palm OS apps are pretty light (fairly slow processor and low Ram requirements) Apple could easily do this. The only downside to this is that they might face a lawsuit for the emulation software. The Upside is that they could build tight integration with Desktop and Portable FileMaker Pro, add and AppleWorks Portable edition, and a conduit to link the Portable Mail/apointment App to Entourage and you have some definate selling points.

Apple will not do a phone. For pete's sake, a phone has about as little to do with a computer as my car stereo. If Apple were to do a phone it would presumably have to link up with the computer in some way. So why not then make it a PDA, too? Sounds good right? An all-in-one device? It's not gonna happen.

Jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. Everyone knows that. The Apple philosophy is do one thing and do it best. If you want complexity, go to windows and some of the crazy-ass devices that won't do well. I want my PDA to allow to be my portable secretary, not my answering service. It would just go against the Apple philosophy. And, seriously, what do you need your phone to do that it can't do already?

[edit: to be on topic... I don't think that Apple will release a Palm OS handheld. There's no reason to, considering they have all the technology in place to come out with a better handheld than anyone else. Even if they did absolutely nothing with the NewtonOS other than give it color support. A Newt 2100 could eat a palm for breakfast and it could surely handle the piddly little apps. It would just like picking it's teeth after a bland meal (the palm, that is). Surely it would be just as easy (or difficult) to gain approval for emulation of the P.O.S. (pun intended) as it would to run the P.O.S.]

No its not, that the unix philosophy . "Do one thing and do it well" is how I usually hear it quoted though.
