Should I "Switch"

Granted, this is obviously a site for Apple fans, so I wanted some advice. I am seriously considering switching to Macs. If I were to do so, I would probably get a Powerbook. The prices on the Powerbooks, from what I can tell, haven't really dropped all that much. I know that Macworld is slated for January, and usually there are huge product announcements. Are there any rumors of new Powerbooks, or new laptops, or anything along those lines that should make me wait? Thanks for any help that may help me switch!

Rule 1: If you need it now buy it now, if you can wait then wait.

Rule 2: Buy something that will do what you need. If you only check email and write papers then buy an iBook. If you are using video editing or photo editing software buy a Powerbook.

Rule 3: Buy through a reseller they tend to not charge tax and add in "free" ram on some things.

Rule 4: If you want to buy through Apple you can buy refurb or even talk a college student into getting you his discount

    Thats all for now,

Apple typically upgrades every 9 months or so, give or take a few months. The current PowerBook is less than 6 months old now, so (despite a long current thread in future hardware) it'll probably be a few months before an upgrade. I'd personally wait if I were you, and then get whatever new one comes out, probably within the next few months.

Don't buy from Apple at all. Sales Tax kills any savings.

What are you going to use it for?

I actually am a college student, how much of a discount can we get? About what I need...there is a chance that I will be running some 3d design programs such as lighwave, maya, or 3d studio max. I am not sure if I will be doing that, but I think it would be smarter to have the availiable power if it becomes necessary. Also, what are some sites I can go to for Mac rumors. I remember shortly before the new Imac was unveilved, that Mac fansites already had info on it.

I'd get the computer when you need it.

Whether or not you should switch... I think Apple's laptops are the best on the market. There are some laptops that will outperform what Apple has to offer right now in terms of raw speed, but those laptops all fall behind in weight, battery life, size, and general usability. Apple's laptops are well balanced in terms of form and function.

In that case i would say get a PB, 3d Studio Max is not avalble for mac but you could run it on Virtual PC.
