<strong>"You can make items on your screen bigger and easier fit more on the screen."</strong><hr></blockquote>Isn't this to be expected based on the current trend of dummying-down the controls and the wizzard/helper things?
err... I was trying to say Aqua looks better and the size of the new Windows sidebar is ridiculous. The interface is cleaner than XP, but it's too blue for my tastes.

Indeed.. the look does benefit from the new muted variation. Still, getting a little too magically delicious, no? Not that I care, but MS's direction seems to be one that has less and less respect for its users (I don't know if this is generally good or bad, considering the average intelligence of the computer user). It depends on your taste I suppose. Me- I'd rather not have my entire OS be one giant "What do you want to do today?" wizard.
first of all, apple's new Jaguar Aqua is something you don't lick, from use to drink out of
second of all (and the last point) is that Longhorn appears to be a giant OS with other things very much so integrated into it so that you will never have to use another program than what MS provides.... it is like all the iApps that apple provides were just more finder windows.... <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
Doesn't look like anything special / unique to me. Same ole W98 / XP look, same ole barage of confusing tabbed dialogs. By the time it comes out it will be a non-event most likely. Especially if the 970 and its successors turn out to be everything we think it will. The war is long over, granted, but by then I doubt anyone will care what MS is doing - at least among OS X regulars.
<strong>...what's the deal with the codename 'LongHorn'? Just wondering.</strong><hr></blockquote>
The Longhorn is the mascot of the University of Texas. The University of Texas is located in Austin. DELL is located in Austin. DELL is the largest OEM. Microsoft is trying to flatter DELL.
I can say I personally do hate it. The default XP blue theme IS worse, but this is not much of an improvement. Apple makes style looks nice ('cept for those pesky pinstripes but still...) I think the Windows theme looks too bloated and just all around nasty. That is my take on it at least. Now, 2K had a pretty fare looking interface, prolly my favorite (which I still did not like all that much) I thought this even when I was still a Mac hater a couple years back. (About 2K, that is)
it better not be called a new, revolutionary design....
Mac OS X, was new and revolutionary, this is the same old stuff
and, I bet when you expand a window or collapse it, it swoops and scale's to its new position...and everyone is gonna be like:
"Whoaw! A Mac Computer can't do that! My one from 1999 that my grandma gave me that I never do any maintince on does not even start up!"
However, Microsoft will not last to 2005, so there is no biggie <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

I'm with you on this one. While I think XP is far better than M$ previous attempts, I don't like the telatubbies feel about the whole thing. Feels as if I just stepped into a bad cartoon. Plus it doesn't seem professional to me to have some big executive playing around on some bubbly GUI. Should have made a "pro-er" version of NT4. Guess that was 2000??
I don't see any tremendous change from the WXP Pro I have on my PC's right now, other than that side bar and the different color which I still think is too garish.
OS X is lighk a breath of fresh air compared to Windows, this is coming from a long time Windows user.
Isn't Panther due to be released sometime in 03? I will be looking forward to it.
Why does the title "My Documents" take up 1/3 of the vertical scren space? Everything in those images demands 1600x1200 resolution or better. Makes Aqua look positively compact.
Has anyone else noticed that the picture associated with the "Theme" bit in Display Properties is the exact same picture as Apple's Beach sreensaver. (see above picture link by
That is an early alpha version of Longhorn. They haven't begun the real UI work yet. Not implemented in those screenshots is the integrated video layer nor the WinFS filesystem based off of SQL.
<strong>Not implemented in those screenshots is the integrated video layer</strong><hr></blockquote>I thought that wasn't planned for inclusion until Blackcomb. No?
why are they changing their gui branding so soon? O_o and I cant see how the sidebar could ever add to useability, looks more like just another place for programs to add themselves too (pc installers now asking "ADD TO STARTMENT/DESKTOP/QUICKLAUNCHBAR/XP START PANEL") this looks more like a desperate attempt to be "innovative" when really its going to end up in the recycle bin with ms bob
I think Eskimo is right that the sidebar thing and a lot of other things haven't been seriously studied yet by MS, at least not in those images (which seem to be relatively old since I've seen the sidebar thing before). MS does make their software appearances more flexible to a fault at times. I imagine they will either streamline it or keep it, and still leave a "traditional" taskbar from XP and/or Win2K as options. Getting to them is another matter. They tend to pile on user choices rather than make too many themselves.

My understanding was that Longhorn got pushed back and some of the features of Blackcomb are being implemented in it.
