Hyundai preps Kona 'subcompact' SUV with Apple CarPlay support

Hyundai this week announced the Kona, its first-ever "subcompact" SUV, which at least in some markets will support Apple's CarPlay standard for bridging iPhones with dash displays.

The vehicle will include CarPlay and Android Auto "where specified," with a 5-, 7-, or 8-inch display "offered as standard or option dependent on market," according to Hyundai. The automaker didn't reveal any more information on how or where CarPlay will be available.

Other high-tech features will include a heads-up display -- projecting things like speed, directions, and lane departure warnings -- and optional wireless charging for smartphones, which may be particularly important given expected support for the technology in this fall's "iPhone 8."

North Americans will have access to perks like HD Radio and 4G, while in Europe drivers will get DAB radio. The Kona will go on sale in those markets sometime after its Korean debut later this month -- prices have yet to be published.

Hyundai has become one of the more prolific backers of CarPlay, introducing it not just to newer models but to slightly older ones via upgrades. This includes 2015 and/or 2016 models of the Azera, Sonata, Veloster, and Genesis Sedan.

That's good to hear.  It looks nice enough, and robust competition in the global automotive marketplace is a good thing.

Wouldn't be easier just to list new vehicles not supporting CarPlay?

Just bought an Audi S5 Sportback with CarPlay in it.

Can't say I am blown away. In the least. Seems rather basic, and lacks a lot of functionality.

Sorry slightly OT but ...  Not having a vehicle with CarPlay ( ... my wife get the new cars I love my 2007 Jeep Grande Cherokee, V8 Limited which my wife tells me will be used as my hearse).  So I recently looked into a few third party after market versions.  I am left puzzled, to work does CarPlay require constant data streaming to function or does it work like an Watch utilizing your iPhone?  I know I know, I should Google!

You didn't try the car out before you purchased/leased it?
