iPhone X questions
- When driving and the phone being connected to a charger on the dashboard (I have a magnetic one), how would I be able to unlock the phone? Currently I use Touch ID but it seems impractical to take the phone out while driving and stick my face in front of the phone.
- Control Center I use a lot. I use it with one hand flicking the pane from the bottom to top. It sounds inconvenient to have to use a second hand to flick the screen from the right top downward. Can this behavior be changed for one hand use?
- How to invoke the notifications screen (currently swipe down from the top of the screen to drag the screen in)?
I love the look of the iPhone X, but it seems Apple was a little obsessed with removing a button, giving up usability for minimalism. But I hope that concern isn’t valid...

2. Still one hand, just flicking down from the UL corner instead of up from the bottom. (I suppose if you have smaller hands, it might not work left handed...)
3. Invoked the same way... you just have to swipe from the top center (or left?), because too far to the right will get you the Control Center.
I don’t know why you think you need a second hand to do it; it’s just top down now instead of bottom up. We can talk about the sins of violating established UI conventions all day long, but that’s what Apple has done/been forced to do by not getting Touch ID working from behind the screen. Something tells me they won’t let you swap the Home/CC invocation gesture, too…
Hopefully that’s just gone; it didn’t really do much. And don’t they show up on the screen that appears when you swipe right from your first Springboard screen? I don’t even know what to call it; the thing with widgets that has the time and date in big characters at the top.
Good point about Control Center flicking, it's just that right now I expect a second hand needed to hold the phone AND to to 'flick-down' Control Center, whereas before my thumb from the same hand that's holding the phone would swipe-up the control center. I can't hold the phone comfortably AND flick down Control Center from the top right without involving my other hand.
Agreed the notifications screen didn't do much. I never use it myself. Just curious I guess because I imagine others might use it often.
I suspect that dragging down from the top-left (left from the notch) will show notifications.
- I’m cooking and reading a recipe from the phone I put somewhere leaning against a wall. As the phone locks I simply press the home button to get back in. With iPhone X I need position myself in front of the phone.
- Using the phone to read music notes as it’s positioned on the piano or drumkit. Same deal as above.
