I've been told NOT to use the cheaper versions that you can get on ebay. I can't remember the name...riker or something.
Go with brand names: TDK, is supposed to be good, Pioneer definitely good, and Mitsui are very expensive but apparently they are the best prosumer brand.
If you don't get at least TDK quality there is a real chance that your vids will not work on regular DVD decks.
Now if your just going to use them as back up, or even to watch on your Mac . . . maybe go ahead and spend less.
Check out the forums at 2-pop.com, its a site dedicated to Final Cut Pro, but they have a very good forum on DVD authoring as well as lots of topics related to media production.
