sliMP3 anyone?
Anyone using the sliMP3 from URL=http://www.slimdevices.com]slimdevices?
It's an ethernet MP3 player which i have hooked into my stereo (starndard RCA jacks) and allows me to access my entire MP3 collection (which is on the hard drive on my 500MHz TiBook in a different room). I have the sliMP3's ethernet port attached to a linksys WET 11 wireless ethernet bridge, networked to my graphite airport base station.
Basically, it kicks some major ass!
I can scan thru my entire itunes music directory, accessing playlists, or creating playlists on the fly. SWEET!
Now all I need is a bigger HD so I can rip my entire CD collection![

very nice... but
Only $249.00

kinda expensive... but i would (probably) pay $300 if it included a wireless hookup...maybe
how does it work? do i just navigate to a directory and it just indexes that folder?
how does it get song names? etc.
And Apple could definitely make it for less than $250!

Yes. And Apple would definitely sell it for more than $500!

You can do it for cheaper by getting a simple FM transmitter, but the quality sucks. This way, the wireless transmission is all digital, so there's no quality loss (so long as your airport network doesn't have any interference/problems - and the WET 11 gets way better reception than my first generation TiBook anyway
The configuration is a little bit tricky; you need some networking know-how (which i didn't have, hence i was up all night but finally figured it out) You just have to configure everything with static IP addresses. The SliMP3 automatically finds your itunes directory (there's sliMP3 server software that you can download from their website). Then you can access all your playlists, or browse by artist, genre, ect. (kind of like the menu system on an ipod) You can also control it from your mac via a webbrowser.
And finally, that would be cool if apple made a device like this - it seems to me to be a fairly obvious idea, but for whatever reason there are few good products out there. And yes, i doubt very much that an apple-branded product would be any cheaper!
