I know this is kina a weird question. I wanted to know if anyone knew of a hard drive type thing...not a server...that i could connect to my network using just an ethernet cable and would allow me to store some larger files that I dont want to eat up space on my PB...I dont even know if there is such a thing. I want something that is small to medium sized...thanks for all your help.

Chris

ps I know a server is an option but i really dont another computer...just a little drive! Thanks

What you are looking for is called NAS (Network Attached storage) This stuff is very pricy. I know Iomega makes one, but it is expensive. I saw another a few weeks ago (Sorry, I forgot the name or company) that used firewire ports to build a RAID array and also attached to a 10/100/1000 network for a network drive. May be overkill, but I wanted one.

    Sooooo expensive. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

Is there a reason that you don't want just an external firewire HD? Do you want a drive to share on the network with other users, but not have it connected to your laptop?

FYI - Linksys NAS about $480 at buy.com.

What you have described is a file server ( a dedicated system that provides large amounts of sharable resources ).

No matter what you think you want or need. The solutions will require hardware that isn't cheap.

Sorry but I don't know that there is a cheaper way.
