How can I tell the speeds of my Combo Drive?
I have... said it a million times before, but mine is a 14 inch ibook 600 with combo drive. Since I bought this baby second hand, and wasn't really into iBooks when I bought it, I actually have no clue how fast the drive is.
Toast Titanium allows me to burn CD-R at 8 speed (at least, it says so...). Then for CD-RWs, speeds are written in black italics (1, 2, 6, 8) and the 4x is black bold. (with the rest grayed out). If I choose 8x, it takes the same amount of 4x (i.e. about 15 to 20 minutes - yikes!).
I'm pretty sure these CD-RWs (a remnant of very early cd-rw days) are only 4x certified. So my question: how fast is my drive: is it possible that the speed is determined by my media (i.e. CD-RW), or is it really only 4 times rewrite? And is it actually 8 times write?
Anybody have facts, or knows how one should interpret Toast speeds?

I was thinking that same question myself today. Bought this Powerbook 667 used and wasn't sure the combo speed..heck, it doesn't say on the box or in the book!
According to that site, yours is either
Standard CD-RW/DVD: 4X/4X/6X/24X
or
in notes it says:
4. 8X/8X/24X/8X CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive standard.
5. Combo drive burns CD-R(W) at 8X, reads DVD at 8X, reads CD at 24X
