My girlfriend just switched! Now what?

Haha this is a good day. My girlfriend just bought an iBook. The question is:

1. How should I go about explaining the OS to her?

2. What must have downloads/ do you think I should tell her about? I'd like to compile somewhat of a complete list so when it comes by Thursday or Friday I could just transfer the compressed files to her iBook to install immediately.

I'm so happy! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Edit: Oh shit this is the wrong forum!

give her first a list of apps you'd suggest her .. and download them already if she agrees about those apps.

also, a small os x and terminal basic guide for terminal might be ok ... in .pdf

then, some links that are all she needs???

    macosxhints.com

    and versiontracker...

download her at least BBedit ...

Nothing too geeky. Anything like that will go in the geek category.

    She absolutely needs

Microsoft Office v.X for PowerPoint presentations

Chimera w/ ChimeraBooster because I can think of no other browser to use but that and the occasional IE.

AOL for her account (brings her own access)

Yahoo! Messenger to webcam (unless someone knows a better client for webconferencing)

iSync with/ palm to sync iCal and her Palm

    Windows Media Player and

RealOne for multimedia other than Quicktime

    Acquisition to download files

    Geeky and/or redundant stuff

    AOL Instant Messenger

    Proteus, Fire, or Adium

    Candy Bar

    Various Icons I downloaded

    Further Network client

    Meteorologist

    OmniWeb

    Still Life

    some AVI plug-in for Quicktime

    Various screensavers I download

    LAME mp3 encoder script

Wireless printer sharing doesn't work from OS 9 to OS X. How do I get to work from OS X to XP? Is it possible?

That's cool. A buddy of mine is buying an iBook soon. Her first Mac. I guess I've been somewhat instrumental in her decision to do so. She digs OS X and iTunes and just the general feeling of "hey, this just works!"

I'm big on icons, so a trip to <a href="http://www.iconfactory.com"; target="_blank">www.iconfactory.com</a> is definitely in order.

Does she happen to be a graphic artist or anything in that realm? If so, I highly recommend a neat little shareware app called <a href="http://www.code-line.com/software/artdirectorstoolkit.html"; target="_blank">Art Director's Toolkit</a>.

It's GREAT for value/measurement conversions, scaling percentage calculations, color conversion help (RGB to CMYK and so forth), etc. I love it. Use it quite a bit.

What about <a href="http://www.panic.com/transmit/"; target="_blank">Transmit</a>? Does she design web stuff or need a FTP app? If so, this one is really nice!

She's a college student like me- undecided major though. Cool Transit link. Thanks!

it seems to me you're going over-geeky on a lot of this.

a LAME mp3 encoder? what's wrong with iTunes, exactly?

    Terminal? Not bloody likely.

iSync/iCal/Address book and Palm Desktop are redundant, you should know that..

Proteus/Fire/Adium, redundant, as is AIM, but if she doesnt' want to use iChat...

Basically: my suggestion: Simpler is better. She already likes you. No need to flex your geek muscle and, by doing so, possibly cause problems with all these redundant, (sometimes buggy (fire/proteus)) apps.

    What's a Further Network Client?

CandyBar? Icons? Too geeky, IMO. Let her customize if she wants to, not automatically saying, here, my way is better. Shareware messages popping up isn't really my idea of a good switching experience...

Still life sounds an awful lot redundant to iPhoto's slideshow.

For a newbie to the mac platform, simplicity and easy is the best.

Not 10 million shareware programs and redundancies that her boyfriend recommended. Apple does a damn good job with the iApps for the basic user; she probably doesn't want (or need) to fumble around with more powerful (and complicated) tools to do THE EXACT SAME THING.

Girls love the iBooks. I told a girl who I constantly hit on that I got a new computer. Immediately she asked "Is it one of those white Mac laptops?" I said "no, it's better. It's one of those Titanium Mac laptops." Didn't impress her, though.

Keep in mind that she has been known to say "I wish I knew more about computers so that I could run Linux." She's not exactly the Hello Kitty type.

Don't you also have a titanium laptop?

Anyway, you've only got the 5 (hundred) MHz. It's a different world, walking around knowing you've got the 10.

VLC stands for video lan client. u can find it on versiontracker.com. i am sorry I can't provide u with a hyperlink.

VLC allows u to play avi,mov and dvi files. In addition, it also allows u to play VCDs and DVDs.

In short, it pretty allow u to watch almost everything, except real media files.

A must have, especially as its free!!

I have a titanium laptop. However, I find it unnecessary to brag about the Mhz of my computer.

Don't give it all to her at once, dish it out a little at a time as she needs it that way she will have a use for you

Yes, my life is full of compensation. Fast cars, slick computers, fancy tuxedos. Damn moral girls. Why can't the sleazy ones NOT be stupid.

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> I get your point. Yeah PalmDesktop really is redundant once I think about it- especially since I already mentioned iSync with the palm software. For the IM clients, we use Yahoo! Messenger to webcam, i'm sure she'll use iChat for day to day im-ing- but she has expressed interest in those all-in-one clients so I'll keep that one. There's nothing too complicated about using LAME once it's installed, and I'm sure she'll appreciate the better sound quality (but maybe you;re right and that is me talking lol). Further Network is cool! It's the Napster of live music- you should get it!

I'm definitely going to keep it simple though. Yeah I'll have to do another edit to the list. Thanks though!

(and yeah it does look like a penis)
