Yeah, I'm really sorry but I gotta rave. I just got Roadrunner and an 802.11 network setup, and let me say, surfing wirelessly across my house @ 220K on my Ti (5 bars) is just the coolest thing EVER.

Any suggestions on Big Downloads?

Games

Browsers

Tools

Damn this is cool.

BTW using a netgear base station (Great, easy, and best of all under 100 bucks)

Thanks for Reading

If you get that bored, you could take a huge file, host it somewhere, and then, for fun, download it.

Thanks, rub it in a little more!

I recently moved to a city that is still in the dark ages. They offer DSL (I don't qualify despite the fact that Ameritech has sold it to me twice and called me once telling me I did) but the cable company doesn't offer cable modems. They even admit that they get 10+ calls a day asking for it.

Still hoping the wireless DSL coming to town will save me.

Enjoy it because going fast without any cables is great until they take it away!

I'll never forget the first day I had wireless broadband. It was almost as great as the day I brought home my first Mac.

I have to add, that the day my broadband became wireless, was better than the first day I had broadband. Doesn't make sense, but is completely true.

Hit some huge shockwave sites, then find all the full screen Quicktime movies trailers you can. I upgraded my QT to Pro (again) once I got broadband. Now if only AdCritic were still around...

Find all these little Cocoa applications developers' sites, and download all that free 30 day trial software. Set them to automatically check for updates since you're always online, and do the same for Apple's Software Update.

Almost makes those stupid internet "polls" they pimp on TV worth it just to watch TV and use the internet at the same time.

    Wireless eh!!

Just dopnt forget to check your security logs and have a damn good firewall(hardware one recommended)

drive by hacking is a big thing lately, and if your on standard settings your going to get hacked sooner or later!!

Yup. You don't know how good you have it until it's gone. I'd have a really hard time dealling with dialup again. It's not even really the speed (my building has old wiring and I rarely get more than 100k on my DSL connection). It's the always-on nature of broadband that makes the biggest difference for me (I hate waiting for a modem connection).

Same for me. When I could sit on my front porch with an AirPort card in my Pismo, it felt like I just got my driver's license.

BuonRotto, adcritic.com is back, but it's now a subscription service ($60/year).

I take it the "5th" bar is a metaphor for insanely high speeds?

    Broadband + AirPort = JustGreat?

    Without reservation, you will:

    1) definitely frequent Apple's Quicktime Trailer site

    2) download quantities of things unseen

    3) find it always on, wherever you go within your house

    4) love it!

Make sure you download Acquisition and Direct Connect for all your downloading pleasure! I remember the first night I had Direct Connect I downloaded 700 songs (Got banned from more than a handful of hubs, but nevertheless maximized my own Airport + Broadband+TiBook possibilities)

    Have fun!

Some people dont realise this, but a wireless router IS a firewall. Your mac will have an internal ip range probably 192.168.100.x. The router will use a method called NAT which is the basis for any good firewall.

As for security for the wireless, dont use the defauls. Set a password and turn on encryption.

On the subject of wireless routers and firewalls...

I had a wireless router in my apartment for a few days before I brought it to lab to use for "real" work. During that time I had trouble connecting to Quake servers through the router - had to plug the cable modem into my computer when I felt like some fraggin'. Is this a general problem when you're behind a router/firewall? Can you tweak the router or computer config to mitigate it?

    Wireless Quake. Mmmmmm.

you just need to configure the port to open the port that Quake uses. Whatever that is.

When I first got my Powermac I still had a dial up connection, it took about 45 minutes to download a 9mb file from System Update, if it didn't get cut off along the way.

Today I have a cable modem & it took just 12 min. to download OS X 10.2.3, a 51mb file, so I'm not complaining!

you're all missing the fun of dial up web access, bet you can't take your DSL and Cable to a friend's house who do not have broadband!! I can take my dial up ISP anywhere there is a phone line. the challenge of downloading 5mb+ files is not a problem if you pray hard enough, i don't see what the problem is.

dial up 53k is the bomb, at least that what i keep telling myself

um, before you flame, it's call sarcasm
