Spring has Sprung...who cares?

Was on the Register site and they have an <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/28611.html"; target="_blank">article</a> about <a href="http://www.usercreations.com/spring/"; target="_blank">Spring</a>, "an innovative, web-inspired desktop for OS X" as the creator says.

The Reg writes a glowing article on it saying;

"Spring gives you a variety of panes, with object inside them that can be grouped. These can tap into the underlying infrastructure - the OS X address book, or AIM, or iTunes, or the Sherlock web services client - thanks to the much underrated power of AppleScript. It's exceedingly well done and Spring offers you a way of organizing your life, and files, as you wish."

Ok, I can see some neato geeky advantages to this thing. But I don't see where this is where an OS UI is going...web based? Nooo way. I still have nightmares about MS's "Active Desktop"...and the possibility of others accessing (invading) it. (They do mention a security feature for this...)

So I'll run down some of the features listed on the Spring web site as to if I'll use any of them:

- Effortless AIMing! Drag between any Spring Object and a person to transfer it to them via AIM (SM)

First of all I don't and never will have AIM. It's an AOL tool and annoying in my opinion. Plus I don't have broadband...next...

- Visual Amazon Products (Via Watson)

What's the point if you have Watson?..someone explain...next...

- 1-Drag Flight Booking For every airport in the US

Wow. Don't travel much...next...

- 1-Drag Personal Intros Drag between two people to introduce them

This sounds like AIM...nope...next...

- 1-Click and 1-Drag Evites To your favorite places with your friends and family

I'm in the dark here...wouldn't the other respondents have to have OSX and Spring to GET these Evites? ...next...

- Visual Web Search Drag between a person, place, product, etc and a search well to search by name

Ubiquitous Mapping/Directions From your home/work to any person or place

This is why I use Google or Mapquest...next...

- 1-Click Store Locators From your home/work

Desktop Weather Personalized to your zip code

Desktop Stock Charts

Another thing that has already been done using other third-party shareware...that's it?

Actually, for the real geek this'll probably be a cornucopa of fun especially with a broadband connection and an affection with AIM...but not for me...

OS X 10.1.5...has spring loaded folders now right? Well there you go...my problem's solved for $128.00 compared to whatever Spring has for me at $21.95.

Plus I don't like web based content...9 times out of 10 the content you recieve now from someone serving it to you will be bankrupted and gone the next year...so what's the point?

Also I can imagine all the customizations of UI's that I would come across to even confuse me more when accessing and sharing another person's computer files.

...take a look and say what you think about it...

No specific comments, other than it's well known that The Register despises Mac OS X. I mean really, really hates it.

Now I have some major quibbles with Mac OS X, but I'm not completely blind to its charms.

The likelihood is that anything that alters the way OS X works will get a big thumbs up from The Register.

Yeah, I have read their reviews. But again this is coming from computer "professionals" (geeks).

I just don't understand the paths UI designers are taking...Spring could be interesting but I just want a UI to be non-intrusive and more or less static (not EVER in 3D either!).

    HD + folders + files = order beyond belief...IMO.

And with great search utils like Sherlock or Watson for the HD/Network and Web...WTF else is needed?

Spring just looks like it turns an OS into a kinky comunication station... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I'm just happy to see ideas like this being experimented with. Whether it's right for everyone or even anyone is another matter. Remember, it's version 1,0 anyway, so it could go in lots of different directions too.

Sure! I have to agree with that. But still, Spring should have been explained better. Novices to this innovation should be given a more detailed explaination about it. I'm baffled as to what half their UI uses are.

Don't get me wrong...it's good to see that people are using OS X into their means of creative input...hopefully Apple might take interest and incorporate them into future versions...

    But for me...right now...kinda stoopid.

I suspect the developer is trying to find its uses too...
