OS X TV solutions

A while back I found something on xlr8yourmac.com that talked about a few ways that us Mac users could watch TV on our computers using OS X (and 9). Today while thinking of things I want to get for my G4 (more RAM, another HD, M-Audio Revolution when it ships), I thought back to the article I found and wanted to relocate it.

I went to xlr8yourmac.com and found exactly what I had seen in the archives. While a Japanese company makes a PCI TV/MPEG capture card, it currently isnt shipping in the US and carries a hefty price tag of around $250. This is where a German company that makes the Televio TV software for Mac OS X (www.meilenstein.de) steps in. According to the article posted and their own website, the Televio software will work with a few Windows TV cards. These are:

LifeView FlyVideo 3000

Elta 8641 LV

Medion PCI Stereo TV/FM radio Tuner map

and their own Televio PCI card

I did a quick search and the only one I could find anything on was the LifeView FlyVideo 3000.

Here is a link:

<a href="http://www.lifeview.com.tw/eng/pro_fly_3000.html"; target="_blank">http://www.lifeview.com.tw/eng/pro_fly_3000.html</a>;

I think that these are probably sold in places like Micro Center and CompUSA, but I am unsure of the price. They are under $100 I believe, how much under is a guess at this point.

If anyone has seen this card cheap online or at a retail store you can notify all of us here.

Apparently there is also a hack to get the WinTV Haupage cards to work in OS X, but I do not know of any links that point to this.

And when I want 320x240 at 15fps, I will do that.

As far as TV for OS X goes, the only acceptable solution (unless you speak work german) is the Formac Studio.

I would love the guys who make Televio to do an English localized version. Unfortunatly, they miss out on being my Christmas present this year.

Im currently asking for help to port Linux drivers and help in general to have DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) cards and USB boxes work in OS X. That will let us all watch Satellite TV and also eventually internet and other multicast services. For a short description, this is what I mean <a href="http://www.eutelsat.net"; target="_blank">www.eutelsat.net</a>

In regards to TV cards, check out <a href="http://www.hauppauge.com"; target="_blank">www.hauppauge.com</a> they have some Mac solutions and am TRYING to get them to help in OS X development (I talked to the German and French managing directors in person, and still nothing unless we foot the bill for the development).

I also would love to do it, but I'm currently busy with the German localisation of iPulse.

I wasnt aware that Hauppauge were the ones who made the myTV. Unfortunately that solution is only USB and I've heard it's a little lacking in terms of OS X support. They have beta drivers I believe but from the comments I've read I'd stear clear of them.

I found out that it's iTV that will allow you to run one of the WinTV PCI cards in OS X, but I am not sure how good this will work and the software install requires things like reintalling the OS etc.

Also from SourceForge I found something in the works called XTelevision, although not much info on the product at this point.

I wanna get something over the break to work so I will probably try to get the LifeView card working . Anyone know how expensive they are?
