Entire Mac Product Line Update???
Well....As The Apple Turns (www.appleturns.com) just today posted a scene saying they've heard from one of their "sources" that the entire Mac product line is set to receive an update. While they remain skeptical, everyone on this board has been saying that they've had an excellent track record when it comes to predicting things. Could this be possible, and if so, what will we see in each product?
Not like I can afford a new Mac at this point, but I'd love to see Apple blow everyone away with style and decimate the competition with performance...

It dovetails with murmurings elsewhere that Apple has finally secured combo drives (not SuperDrives) for the TiBook. As for the iBook, I can't believe the revision would be something as significant as a bigger screen. I can believe something like the 500Mhz variant going bye-bye, and the 600 MHz dropping down to the original $1299 price point (or lower). That "refreshes" the iBook line without requiring a dime in engineering costs.
I'm still not expecting a significant refresh of the portable lines until later this spring (Tokyo, or an Apple Event in March).

Everyone says the iMac needs to get to G4 to handle X and attract non-Apple users. But you can't burn the Powerbook users (especially after popping FC3 and hopefully some Adobe apps AE, etc.), and even if you could leave the iBook behind, it'll need a bump by Tokyo.
And I've seen little mention of this... The PowerMac case is also out of date if the iMac is -- Quicksilver doesn't solve the problem even if the color scheme is consistent. And, especially if it is G5, this machine will need to look DIFFERENT. Wouldn't want to confuse it with your "ordinary" G4 PowerMac.
Yes, I'm starting to believe that the iMac and PowerMac will receive inside and outside a major rev. The 'books will follow not because it's necessary, but because Apple is going to be able to wow us... Might as well wow us all at once. Besides, they need to get the entire G3/G4/G5 -- OS X/Classic -- I/O and internal drive issue on track for the fantastic year that 2002 is going to be.

Then maybe the next gen TiBook will surface at MWT.
Somehow though, I still think MWT will be focused on portables, and maybe even bring forth a new digital device of some kind.
They were pretty sly about the G5s in this one. Initially, they made it sound like "no way", but then they sucker-punched us at the end. This is their way of saying G5s are a sure thing.
So, I think we can bank on an update/remake of the entire computer line. To me, it appears they are confirming an iBook with a 13.3" screen (+ speed bump), a slot-loading combo drive for the TiBook (+ speed bump), a new LCD iMac, and G5 processors for the tower lineup.
I wouldn't bet my house on it, but it looks pretty solid from my viewpoint.

This one sounds to me like one of their own. And that's a Good Sign?.
"We're thrilled to move the keynote up to Monday, and begin the excitement a day sooner."
"Steve's keynote is a great way to start what will be a very exciting and informative week for all Macworld attendees," said Charlie Greco, president and CEO of IDG World Expo
This looks to be interesting. plus, this is the first time in the 18 year history of macworld that the keynote will be Before the expo opens. Interesting. In other words, we want to tell you what you're seeing before you see it.
You've got to be careful with AtAT about whether they are reporting other sites' rumors, or presenting their own. They do report most rumors that come out from MOSR, AI, the Register, etc.

That's not hard, because if Jack gets a rumor from somewhere else he says so, and links to the source.

I'm not convinced that he's confirming bigger screens for the iBook. After all, he got no response on that inquiry. If the iBook gets a refresh it'll probably be something that requires no engineering (my idea) or very little (a new 700MHz model, bigger HDs, etc.), with more significant changes like new screen sizes appearing when the line is overhauled later this spring.
Personally, for the iBook I'd prefer battery life improvements and weight reduction to performance and screen size (especially since a 13.3" screen would probably still display 1024x768). If Apple could roll out an honest-to-goodness 8-hour laptop, that would be amazing.
All these rumors are driving me insane! Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

Me too.. I keep coming around here every few hours, just to see what's up.. I've gotta stop it, cold turkey.. it'll just spoil my MW expo keynote..
Just quietly slipping that in...

I agree. I got a chance to hold a new iBook at my local Wiz and I was surprised by the battery weight. If they can reduce the iBook's weight even more, that is where the reduction would have to come from.
Apparently, the combo (cdrw + dvd) drive is about to appear come December 18 on powerbooks, at the same price as the current models + cdrw.

Where'd that come from?
If they truely believed that the PM line was to be updated, wouldn't they wait the three weeks?
Or are they just getting in on the Crystal Clear promotion?
The portables could use a speedbump. For example 700-750MHz with 20GB drives for the iBooks and 733,866MHz and combo drives for the PowerBooks.

They know the PowerMac is being updated. They just don't feel like waiting til feb.
