How close do you sit to ur screen?

I didn't used to sit close to my screen but as of lately, i have been finding myself six inches away from my screen, when i can read perfectly fine 2ft or so away. I have noticed that i'm starting to get a LITTLE blurry in my left eye at things further away, but I can't imagine that would be it.

Just looking for a consensus, and is there anyway to fix me accidentaly doing this without having to think about it...or duct taping my head to my chair?

Haha...I got a tape measure and checked it one day. If I'm not completely examining (or enthralled by) something, I tend to be about 20-24" inches away. My desk is set up in a way that the part the iMac sits on is on the very back part of the desk, plus the slide-out keyboard/mouse shelf extends out a good 8-10" the other way. And I don't "hover" over my keyboard (I sit back another foot or so).

I think I'm at a good distance. I don't have any eye aches or problems and I've been using computers daily (for long periods of time) for nine years now.

Oddly, I'm the ONLY person I know in my ENTIRE circle of friends, co-workers, family, hangers-on, peripheral buddies, neighbors, etc. who doesn't wear glasses or contacts.

I'm serious. I was thinking about this one day and I honestly could not recall anyone I know that doesn't wear glasses or contacts.

I've always had really good vision, and still do [knocks really hard on the nearest piece of wood...no, not THAT wood...]

I don't know exactly how close I sit to the screen but I can sit really far back and see the screen fine, I've always had amazing vision.

Lately I've noticed my vision is a bit blurry, and I've used computers everyday for the past two years. At my computer I sit about a-foot-and-a-half from my screen. I can read just fine, but things that are far away(+15') are blurry.

you have become short sighted and should get a perscription ASAP.

If your using a CRT monitor you should set up your refresh rate to 85hz or higher to avoid flickering and eyestrain.

As for for how far i can sit away from my screen, well with a very big telescope id say about a mile and half.

yeah besides my younger sister who is only 10 so she still might yet and most of my friends, they all wear contacts or glasses, i have good eyes and i'm not worried about them going bad but i guess i'll jut have to start making a conscious effort to not have my head too close...i think it was from playing ghost recon, i wanted to look closly at things and i put my head close for examination haha

Usually a couple feet away for me. I generally have my Ti in my lap, just above my knees (on a coolpad, of course. The little soldiers don't like to be baked... ). When I'm working on something that requires precision (Illustrator or photoshop), I've been known to get really close but not usually...

I keep the screen about 3 feet away, although at home that means that I lean back in my chair all the time.

The human eye is not designed to focus on objects within 3 feet for long periods. If you do this, you become nearsighted as it realigns itself to adapt.

If you do keep your screen closer than that, be sure to look away from the screen every 15 minutes or so and focus on something much farther away.

Unfortunately, I learned all this after my vision (originally 20/16) had deteriorated somewhat. I still don't need glasses, but I probably will in the next few years.

I did me eyes in on a really old VGA monitor years ago and wasnt aware of the problems hey can have on your eye sight, as a result my eyes are buggered.

I think everyone who has bad eye sight due to computer screens should get together and sue the manufacturers (just like the tobaco industry), Just a thought but at least they should pay for new glasses every couple of years.

Unfortunatly I have a TiBook so that means I sit relativly close to the screen. If it is on my lap there is about 2.5ft between the screen and me. The iMac G4 is a different story tho. I would think I sit around 1 to 1.3ft away from the screen...

...I am just about to move it a little futher away from me!

'Bout three feet, and my working area is lighted with a lamp, even when my cieling lights are on. I think that does something, no?

Probably 2 ft. although I hunch forward towards the screen in my chair. I might move the base of the iMac closer.

50cm sounds about right, of the time. When I'm reading from a PDF or whatnot, though, I usually blow it up and lean back. when I'm 3D modeling, I can sit very close. Sometimes less than 10cm from the screen.

My vision? Not too good, but then-again it's not terrible by any means. To the extent that it's hard for me to identify faces of passerbys in low-light, but I can generally function pretty well without my glasses. It also doesn't hurt that I blow up everything: webpage text, word processor documents, PDF's, etc.

    ...between 12 to 24" (LCD).

I sit at about arm's length from my flat 19" CRT. If I reach straight forward and lean in a little bit, I touch the side of the screen with my fingertips. So that's about, what, 2-3 feet?

    Comfortable arms distance away...

My eyes are about a meter away from this Apple 15" flat panel.

    My younger brother sits about 20cm away though <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

They say arms length is about right. My boss had his optometrist make a set of glasses for him that's perfect for arms length. Then he set a high screen resolution on his computer.

I thought all this stuff about computer use changing your eyesight was an update old wives tale. Any one have an real research to back that up.
