512SSD or 2TB Fusion drive?

Hi Everyone,

I have two related questions - I'm torn between getting the 512GB SSD drive and the 2TB Fusion Drive. I think I would prefer the SSD drive but I'm worried about how small it is. I hope to learn how to edit video in Final Cut Pro, and I'm not sure if a faster hard drive is better than a larger one. I can easily add an external drive if I need to.

Related to my impending purchase is that my current 1TB drive is pretty full. I realize I can use external drives (I already do for other things) but I'm a little confused as to how to do data migration. Will I be doing everything manually? That seems HORRIBLE :)

Thanks in advance!

Robert

The SSD is better to get for an internal drive, the hard drive included with Fusion will struggle with higher resolution videos. Large files are easy to move to external drives, especially video files but what you can do is keep active projects on the external and offload them to the external when done. Check what is using the most space on your internal drive. Apps like Diskwave can help with that, turn on hidden files in prefs in case there are large caches somewhere:

The files that use the most space but are least used can go on an external. The external can be an SSD too. You can get 1TB SSDs for around $200 now:

    https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-1TB-SSD-WDS100T2B0A/dp/B073SBQMCX
    https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Tool-free-Enclosure-Optimized-EC-UASP/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S

That would give you 1.5TB total storage that is faster than a Fusion drive. You can use movie files directly from the external in FCP X by leaving the files in their source location. Also remember to keep backups of everything, have an external drive or two for keeping copies of everything on the internal and the external drives, never have just one copy of data. You can use cheaper external hard drives for backups.
