I've had a craving to try out somthing new. I've been thinking of installing linux on my iBook 300 or my old Performa 6300, or both. For the iBook I want it as a duel boot system w/ OS X, and as duel boot with OS 8.6. I've read around and only found one version that will run on the Performa, mkLinux. Has anyone ever used this distro, or have any pointers of going about this?

    go here:

    <a href="http://www.yellowdoglinux.com"; target="_blank">YDL</a>

i have yellowdog on my ibook 600 combo now. make sure you read the installation stuff thoroughly before you do the install.

btw, YDL is for your ibook, i dunno if it will run on the 6300.

    for more fun:

again, also for your ibook. it's BSD, and i'm sure it will run on your ibook. im also a *nix n00bie, i recommend trying BSD stuff first. Linux is a bit strange, IMHO

With all respect, I'd have to ask why bother...

If you just want a new look/feel thing, try getting KDE or Gnome running in Apple's X11.

Underneath it's all just UNIX-derived OSes anyway... Linux, Darwin, not really a whole lot to choose from between them.

You can do all the command line stuff as easily in X as in Linux, and X11/Fink brings in a lot of the missing Apps.

    Just an opinion....

See, I have an old Performa in the basement doing nothing. It can't run OS X, and is pretty useless. I wanna try to get somthing out of it. Maybe a webserver or somthing. Besides, I think this stuff is FUN.

So mkLinux was helped along by Apple? Thats also the only one I can find that has a kernel that can run on the 6300's propitiatory bus.
