User guide suggests Apple expected AirPower to ship with iPhone XS

The physical user guide that ships with all iPhone XS devices includes prominent mention of Apple's extremely delayed AirPower, suggesting the company's plans to launch the wireless charger this month changed at the last minute.

As noted by developer Gavin Stephens in a tweet on Thursday, Apple urges new iPhone XS owners to charge their device with AirPower or a Qi wireless charger.

Apple mentions AirPower under the "Charging" section of its usual instructional pamphlet. Wording used suggests the company planned to position the device as a main charging source, with Lightning offered as an alternative.

"Place iPhone with screen facing up on AirPower or a Qi-certified wireless charger. You can also use the Lightning connector to charge iPhone and connect accessories."

Announced alongside last year's slate of iPhones, AirPower is marketed as an all-in-one power delivery solution for the company's portable device lineup. The charger features in-house developed technology that allows users to juice up multiple devices simultaneously, including the non-Qi compliant Apple Watch and an as-yet-unreleased AirPods wireless charging case.

Some expected AirPower to launch with iPhone XS, but the product failed to make an appearance during last week's hardware unveiling. Further, Apple scrubbed nearly all mention of AirPower from its website following the event. One photo of the device remains on a page dedicated to AirPods.

The abrupt removal prompted speculation that AirPower might never arrive, and Apple refuses to comment on the matter. Rumors circulated on Monday suggest technical issues, namely heat and radio communication troubles, are to blame for the delay. Reports claim a new AirPower device will see release as soon as next spring.

As AppleInsider explained last week, AirPower is an advanced charging solution that requires a number of cutting edge technologies to work together in order to function properly. Specifically, AirPower is thought to rely on multiple flux generators that work in tandem to intelligently deliver power to three devices at the same time, a more complex system than common Qi chargers.

If Apple builds it, we will come.

    ...and 2nd gen AirPods.

Must be something very recent. That would mean product was ready to ship at one point..

Has there been any official announcement other than the wireless charging case?

Seems it's coming. Even if the packaging was manufactured 2 months ago, then Apple expects it to come.

There is an intro video with 2nd gen AirPods?   (I think you're talking about something different Matrix.)

It could but clearly it’s not. There’s no update for AirPods.
Beside we all know Apple will update AirPods with wireless charging case. There is no reason to show unreleased, unannounced feature unless it’s tied to something they wanted to announce: new AirPods with wireless charging case & AirPower.

Ok Apple never teases a product before an official reveal but that last sentence of yours... you may be onto something.

Not a big deal. When you’re making 70 million of something, you may need to plan ahead.

There was mention that the "AirPower" moniker might be used for a different (power-related?) product than the one that was originally promised.

Actually there has been updates for AirPods, one that changed tap functionality about a year ago.

Don't get your hopes up: the intro video is no guarantee for anything. They also showed teleporting on an Apple Watch...
