If you compress dual layer DVD to fit on one DVD-R using ffmpegxi wouldn't worry too much about quality, it will be good enough.

I will try this compression (and i'm using a DVD-RW so i don't have to waste DVD-R's)
the only thing that worries me is u said 'good enough' what do you mean, will i notice a difference?
There are comercial products (or alt least one) on windoze that lets you do this. Why does everything always come so late on macs?

ffmpegx supposed to be the easiest solutions, but...
it doesn't work for me, or at least not everything works as it should.
In order to burn dual layer DVD on one DVD it has to be compressed, and i believe it has to be mpeg2 so standard DVD player can read this.
Now ffmpegx uses mpeg2enc as mpeg2 encoder, and i couldn't make it work.
i tried both ripping 'straight' from device, and from .vob file, NO LUCK.
But i'm able to create vcd discs without any probs, but since that's not what we want i will stop here. So to sum it up so far ffmpegx is a no go.
But, i used osex, and sucessfuly ripped dual layer DVD into single .vob file and it's 3.6GB, so there you go, now i just have to find a way to get this on DVD so it will be playable..
As it is now you can play it with VLC.
I also e-mailed the author of ffmpegx with my problems, and he sugested a few things, so i guess i have to work on that a bit more....
And to answer previous quastions:
If you rip DVD using mpeg2, in my opinion quality is OK, it's not original DVD (as now you compressing it twice) but is good.
And yes i used disc copy app to create an image from device, then burned it on DVD-R and is perfectly playable on most DVD players.
It just did no probs, At least maybe DVDs i tried weren't copy protected, but Dancer in the dark is a fairly new DVD so
with ffmpegx...well how do i use it. when i tried to convert a .vob file it did it in like 10seconds and the result was a TS_VIDEO folder like 16k or something
ATTENTION! Forty-Two is AWESOME! I haven't copied anything yet but it's interface is a beauty. Once I have the space and a SupaDrive I'll trying duping a few DVDs, most of which are dual-layered. I will report the results.
Yes piwozniak I want to know if those DVDs you copied with Disc Copy play in a DVD player. I mean they couldn't have been protected if Disc Copy copied them. Why do you think there are separate apps designed to copy DVDs? Because they are specially protected with encryption called "DSS" and apps like Forty-Two and DVDExtractor crack this.
Forty-Two looks so awesome and it is getting a blizzard of updates. This guy is THE MAN.
So DVD-Rs don't come bigger than 4.7 gigs? If they don't I assume they eventually will, it's like the 74 minute CDs vs. 80+ minute CDs. I've seen 90 min CD-Rs.

Mac Video forum
... and if you look at the sites homepage, you will find a host of other Mac related information, including a link to other related sites.
The other link on Afterdawn is specifically for Mac software.
