nVidia's GeForce FX might spell doom for nVidia...

According to <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,846478,00.asp"; target="_blank">this article</a>, the brand-spanking-new nVidia GeForce FX is really not much better than the Radeon 9700. In fact, some tests have it behind the 9700, while others have it only 6% faster. And it's not shipping yet, costs much more, and the 9700 is months old and is scheduled to be replaced soon.

Is this the beginning of the end for nVidia? Will the FX do for nVidia what the G4 has done for Apple?

It's dissapointing to say the least but that's the cycle of computers. 3dfx once had the same market prowess that nvidia currently shows. Apple was smart to keep both manufacturers in the fold as they can cherry pick the best solution for a given product as far as video display needs go. I'm curious to see the next revision to the 9700. This race is becoming more exciting and just got a whole lot more interesting.

Umm... if Apple carefully picks the best graphics chips of the two for their computers, then why did they pick a GeForce 4 Go instead of a Radeon 9000 for the new PowerBooks? I can understand putting one in the 12" PowerBook because it is a lower cost model that calls for a lower cost graphics card, but the 17" should get the best available... which is the Radeon 9000.

thats weird, i've heard that the FX crushes the 9700.

perhaps nVidia is in 17" because it was more viable for that model...there are always reasons, maybe the price needed to be kept down, or perhaps it supported the larger LCD better who knows (well that last example was pretty much crap but u see where i'm going)

nvidia has been held up by tsmc's manufacturing problems in getting .13 production up and running. nvidia's design dept has not been sitting still doing nothing. I'd expect the FX to be very shortly replaced with the FX 2, but that ATI will be out with their next 9700 revision first, and keep then right in the game if not the lead.

I'd don't suspect this to be the end of nvidia, but its not good for the bottom line, and they'll hurt until atleast the next product cycle.

This is good people... 2 companies that have dedicated fan bases and good designs, and both are fighting to hold on to their success. It means better products, faster and cheaper.

Apple probably wanted to distribute the ATI/nVidia thing among their computer more. Anyways, barefeats shows that the nVidia is faster on a Mac in opengl ( <a href="http://www.barefeats.com/pb17.html"; target="_blank">http://www.barefeats.com/pb17.html</a>; ) though XBench isn't exactly bugfree.

ATI is soon ready to update their models which will just blow nVidia away again. I mean, who wants a graphics card that takes up an AGP slot and a PCI slot, sheesh. I guess I'm partial to ATI, who has been with the Mac platform longer.

And considering the noise the FX makes, there's no way Apple will put one in the powermacs, which are loud as they are.

With full detail, heavy AA, and all goodies turned on, the ATi and nVidia offerings fair about the same because the ATi's sheer memory bandwidth comes into play.

ATi does have the upper hand right now, but nVidia's certainly not even on the ropes...they've got the XBox deal and a very nice mainboard chipset to tide them over right now. Plus they have a better reputation among PC users as far as drivers go.

...and if you want to actually "hear it", go here:

The FX is dissapointing to say the least. It's not the end of nvidia by a long shot however...don't forget they have moved to 0.13 process which gives them a long term advantage and probably delayed them...

Oh well, neither are available for the mac anyway...
