Well I just switched.....to a PC

I was in the market for a new desktop and $999 for a 2.6ghz/120GB/520MB/Radeon All-In-Wonder 9000/front access Firewire+USB/48X CD-RW machine was just too good of a deal to pass up. I've used XP so I know what I'm getting into but $999 is jsut so good. Anyway, I still use macs for my portable computing needs and I still have this iMac until my PC gets here, so I'm not abandoning you guys.

One of my friends is crazy with trying to decide between Macs and PCs. He had PCs for quite a few years, until he got a 500 MHz iBook in late 2001. Since he sold the iBook a year ago (it got clawed by his cat), he's owned three Macs and built three PCs.

PCs aren't nearly as bad as people here make them out to be. Just as Macs aren't nearly as bad as die-hard PC enthusiasts make them out to be. Windows XP is quite easy to set up, according to my friend... just boot up, format the drive, and install. It'll put drivers for all your stuff. And the stuff is cheap, too. I mean, Windows XP doesn't have nearly the polish of OS X, but it's not bad like Win95/98 either.

Personally, I am a Mac enjoyer. I enjoy using my iBook and I really don't care for anything else, or even anything different. I'd be happy to just stay with my iBook forever, except I'd have to eventually stop updating my software to make sure it still runs fast, and I'd probably have to get a few new batteries after a while. I would consider buying a PC if I really needed one, but I have no need at all - my Mac does everything I want it to. If I were a power user, or some crazy game-monkey, then I'd get a PC. But I don't need one and my iBook is highly competitive with other PC laptops, both in price and performance.

EDIT: G4Dude, how come it's $999 for that thing? I suppose the 2.6 GHz processor is fairly expensive, but from discussing the various components with my friend, it seems that your setup would probably only cost $700-$800. I mean, the PC he's making now is going to cost something like $700 and it has a Radeon 9500. But I'm not sure. Does that include a monitor, or are you using one you already have?

It's $999 because I'm not building it. I was lazy and just bought one from a company. It's a pretty good price for a name brand PC though

Depends on the set-up. I spent over a thousand bucks on a 2.4 GHz P4, though everything else is tip top of the line.

You can shave off up to $100 bucks on cheap motherboards. You can buy house brand RAM. AMD people usually save a lot by buying OEM CPUs instead of retail packages. Heatsinks can be found between $10 and $50. Some people are satisfied with onboard sound...Some people choose to get only one optical drive. There's a lot of variance. It's quite easy to build a 2.4 GHz PC for $500 actually (not including monitor or software.)

I did think about going faster, but right now the 2.6 GHz (400 MHz) P4 costs $306 while the 2.4 Ghz (533 MHz) P4 costs $189 @ GoogleGear. The 400 Mhz parts actually cost more than the 533 MHz parts at stores like these because enthusiasts love to overclock them. Even the low-end 533 MHz parts are highly overclockable though.

Being a Mac user and having a PC also doesn't make anyone a freak. PC's are cheaper so it's worth it when you have a POS OS with it. So you can play games better...whoopee. I've heard that Computer game sales have gone down whereas XBox and Playstation game sales have gone up...

If I could afford it I would get a Wintel Laptop...but since Apple introduced a great and varied line of their own... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    Ditto here.

Or just get a game console.
