Do all the apple laptops have waiting lists or can I walk into an Apple store (or other mac store) and instantly pick one up? The modles include:

12.1" iBook

14.1" iBook

12" Powerbook

15" Powerbook

THX

I would strongly advise buying in store, I know it's easy t buy on the web but if you buy at a store you can check for dead pixels.

Oh, yes. I will buy in a store, but I was wondering if there is a waiting list or back order for the laptops. I need to get the laptop the same day.

All of them should be in the stores except for the 12" PBs.

Will an Apple Store actually let you unpackage a laptop, rip the "Read the Software License Agreement" sticker that seals the little sleeve it's in, power it up, and check for dead pixels?

And if you found a couple, they would let you do all of this AGAIN with another one?

I mean, you'd have to partly set the machine up, as in choosing a user name for the installation. You don't have to register it, but you do have to enter an owner name to get the OS to boot for the first time, don't you?

I'm just suprised that they let anyone do this. If you turn it down, are they not going to have one hell of a time selling it to someone else? The local reseller here doesn't let you do that. There is a big chain that has a 15 day return policy I guess, but I always wondered about them being able to easily resell them.

So the official Apple Stores - has anyone actually done this with a laptop?

Both Apple Stores in the Metroplaex as well as several CompUSAs in Ft. Worth/Arlington have the 12"...

I did but that was a long time ago. I configured my Beige G3 how I wanted, brought the printed page to "The Apple Store" and they built it.

Did they have a lot in? I know the stores have a couple in but I didn't think too many.

I had a dead pixel for about a day. I gave it a little 'Flick Justice' and it started to work.

Go to an Apple Store, and tell the salesman what yuo want to do (starting up the computer) ... If they dont agree to this (they should), then wave some cash in thier face and ask them if they really want you to leave without buying the computer.

They are in business to sell computers ... all you want is to make sure you walk out with a non-defective one ... seems reasonable.

(Maybe they'll want you to sign a sales invoice first, but if they'll let you open boxes till you get one that's perfect, then why not.
