MOVED: [I am] Coming to America
or at least, I think I am. Here's the deal: I have received an open ticket to anywhere on continental USA. One stinger: I have to use it before the end of February (and I've known this for two weeks now). I have now practically decided that I'm going. Yet I'm still wondering a bit: where should I go? I'm mostly interested in going to NYC, and then travelling around to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C.
I would like to travel by bus or train in the US, so I'd get to see some of the countryside too. Sleep, I would do that in youth hostels, seeing my relatively moderate age (twenty-three).
Know that this is my first time across the Atlantic, though I have been as far as Kenya before (you may know that I am -as dr. Evil apparently, from the lovely town of Bruges, Belgium).
So, the one thing I'm in doubt about: maybe the west coast (California specifically) would be make a better visit this time of year. We do have cold weather here, occasional freezing, snow, etc.
Anybody willing to make a good case for California over, ... New England? Or vice versa?
Could somebody tell me more about the transportation methods I covet? About the lodging? How are they, what do they cost? (as you see, this'll be a hastily planned trip).
Anybody know some nice Apple stores along my path? We don't have them over here, and I wouldn't mind seeing them, not to mention seeing NEW Apple hardware at prices lower than what one and two year old second-hand goes around here.

If you really want to see another city, go to Boston and than D.C.
That'll be a lot of traveling but at least there's interesting things to do in those cities.

If you want to see a city, go to NYC. If you want to see the outdoors, go to the west coast (anywhere from Northern California to Washington state, or even British Columbia if your ticket can take you to Canada).

No Apple Store, other than baillos. However, it would be an experience you would never forget, and leave you begging for more food. That is where I am from. However, there are a lot of places for you to go. If it were me, coming over for the first time, I would probably go to NYC. Just cause, it draws you in. But if you truly want something different Niji has a strong case.

san fran is always chilly
santa fe would have the best feb weather and best skiing or boarding if you like to do that....santa fe is small though, but nice shops and galleries and great food...it would be safer than the other cities, but much much much less night life...new mexico is a quiet, laid back state....
depending on your age and likes and dislikes i would say NYC first as it has EVERYTHING....but older people and outdoors people love new mexico

You will definitely enjoy the weather a lot more in February on the west coast or in the southwest. February in NYC can be a bit nasty.
not to speak for jonathan (he can do that easily enough himself) but i gather that many of us are fairly busy and don't have time to meet with people from the AI forums...if you get to dc and also get to meet jonathan, that would be nice, but i don't know if that would be a pressing need for him...no insult intended...g
now since he is a local boy, if ijerry came to town i could see having a beer with him...and if murbot came down south i could see us having some tequila and ending up in jail...brad? love brad, but he is too close to my kids age...so he could visit, but i'd be kicking him out before 9pm...other than those three, any visits would have to be on a purely Private Message type contact...random AI human visits at thegelding household would result in bodies buried in the backyard...and i got lots of room in the backyard to hide bodies....g

I was there a week in March 2001(for a training course). I stayed at the <a href="http://www.hotelsantafe.com/"; target="_blank">Hotel Santa Fe</a>. (Nice place, run by indians, but a different price class than a hostel. ) Unfortunately, I didn't have much free time, so I only did some walking throught the nice downtown and some eating (Coyote Cafe, Cowgirl Cafe, ...)
