Columbia House DVD Program

Anyone ever try this one? Basically, you get 5 DVDs for "$.50" a piece, then you buy 4 more at standard ($20+) prices over two years.

My question: are the DVDs they send in good condition or are they over-stock from department stores and returns from Blockbuster, etc? "Minor defects" galore??

Also, can you return them at no cost (other than postage maybe) if you receive one that has damaged packaging or discs?

I don't know how this particular program works, but if it's anything like their cd service, you get ripped a new one on shipping and handling charges. Something like $3 a pop. It's ridiculous. And then the mark up on the "regular" price cd's is outrageous. In the end, you come out barely ahead and you will end up behind if you're not religious about sending back your "selection of the month" refusals. It's not worth it, IMHO.

I'm cancelling my DVD CH subscription. It's cool if you take advantage of the Special and then quickly fulfill your agreement and cancel.

Like Torifile says you have the hassle of refusing your Directors Selection. If the selection is sent you're charged like $30 which is usually 26.95 for the DVD <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[surprised]" /> and then shipping and tax. Keep in mind the shipping is Media Mail which means a DVD can take a week and a half to get to you. I've found that DVD's can be purchased from a variety of sources like DVDplanet.com or deepdiscountdvd.com which will obviate the need for CH. However I can confirm that the discs arrive in good order and no problems have I seen there.

Thanks guys. I figured it was something like that. I've never done their CD things because it always seemed like they were hiding charges from you until you sign on. Getting shafted on shipping and handling is the usual route. Guess I'll stick with Amazon and other reputable retailers (although Amazon's DVD prices aren't great unless you go through their Z shop thing).

i remember reading rigorously through columbia house's cd agreement, until i wasn't absolutely certain certain that i understood everything they were gonna try and do. so, after i get like 2 or 3 cds on the cheap, they tried to send me some overpriced shit. now, the agreement never said anything about me having to accept stupid shit like that. i returned it with a hand written letter saying that if they want my business they have to cut the shit and not send me random fvcknuts and try to charge me for it. i said if they agreed they should send me what i actually ordered, if they didn't they should stop sending me anything. i haven't been bothered since.

I didn't feel like jumping through the hoops they had set up to get out of the program after I had fulfilled my agreement, so I just quit sending in the selection of the month cards and just wrote "refused. return to sender" on all the cds they sent me. I saved the postage on the cards and I was dropped from the program pretty quickly after that.

I don't know if this applies to the Columbia House DVD service, but one of the reasons I would never use the CD service was that the CD's were specially made for Columbia House and the packaging was sometimes of lower quality. They could be using crap masters too. More importantly artists were/are paid lower royalty rates on CD club sales.

columbia house cd's were unique prints of the cd's, and were often lower quality. i wouldn't trust their DVD's
