I want to get a kit so I can use my iPod in the car. So I'm looking at a cassete adapter or fm transmitter

i'd also like to mount it somehow and i guess i need to buy a charger.

any recommendations? I just have the standard Apple case for my 20GB so.... i guess for mounting id probably have to buy a new case huh:-\\

I also would like to spend around 50... maybe 70....:-\\

Hmm... this is kind of neat too:

TransPod Plays, charges and mounts iPod all in one unit The iPod is a must-have in the car, but the current iPod car solutions create a mess of wires and leave the iPod on the seat, the dash or in a cup holder

Costs $96.99 though. Transmits through FM on the radio. No idea if it's good... just found it while doing a little Googling.

    otherwise something to look at.

monster cable now makes a charger for the iPod, as well as a 1/8th inch speaker to RCA outs. it's nice if your deck as RCA ins as an AUX option.

most decks that can control CD changers are set up this way.

that's how i have my iPod in my car. it's a great setup.

edit: oh yeah, i should let you know i tried the FM transmitter thing for months. it sucks ass. i went through 3 or 4 different kinds, none worked that well. always needed tweaking, and there'd be static. i hate static.

go with a straight shot physical wire from iPod to deck. anything else will always annoy the crap out of you.

hm... my car already has a cd changer installed... wish it has a aux in on the front like some stereos have now

Direct connection to the stereo is best, but most people have to choose cassette adapter or FM transmitter. I've used both, and here's what I've found.

FM Transmitters (like iRock) are okay, but you have to get it in just the right spot to get a stereo signal. It's also a pain to remember to turn it on and off each time. Finally, it seems they usually have a high-pitched FM tone coming from them all the time. It's quiet, but noticable.

Cassette adapters tend to have clearer sound, but the only drawback is that you can hear the "tape hiss" of the heads on the adapter. If stuff like that bothers you, it could be a problem.

I'm fine with the little bit of hiss from the cassette adapter, and overall I prefer them.

But a direct connection is preferable.

yea... looks like fm transmitters are a pain in the ass and a cassete adapter is the only choice for me

now i have to figure out which case to get so I can mount the iPod...

im looking at the Xtreme Mac case since i bought that for my last summer but i dont know how great that would be in the car since it has the flip lid and i would imagine that being annoying in the car.

what's the best slip case out there that has a post in the back for mounting?

I was told by a guy at Radio Shack that the FM things stink (apparently he had a lot returned, and didn't want to be bothered dealing with a product that was just going to come back from a pi$$ed-off customer. Whan a salesperson at Radio Shack doesn't want to sell you something, listen!). to hold my iPod, I use <a href="http://www.laptraveler.com/cellmounts.htm"; target="_blank">this</a>. It works surprisingly well.

applenut, i probably didn't explain that aux in bit very well.

decks that can control cd changers usually DON'T have a straight AUX in. rather, they have converters you can buy (approx $20) to convert the changer in port (in the back) to an AUX in port (RCA style)

because it's a cd changer AUX in though, you get much better sound quality than if it's just a headphone jack style one on the front.

it's not too tough to take out a deck, cut a hole for the wire then run it to where you want your iPod to sit. i've found that i'm finally happy with this setup now, after playing around with over a dozen different methods.

is there anyway to then have both the cd changer and iPod connected at once?
