Dont belive a word of it!

crap like this always appears about apple becaus ethey dont understand the company. in fact they've been saying this for years and apple is in fact far from dead.

when people like that write articles about apple going under they always claim to be mac users when in fact their just PC retards who feel threatened by a superior platform.

he should have just said it..i used to use a powermac 4400 running OS 9 with tons of software installed causing it to crash...software i don't even use but have on my system in hopes my computer will crash

also, i think it says alot that major vendors create software formacs, specially when macs have only 3-5%

wish there was a reply to his story, or a send him an email

Problems with Palm software caused him to say this? If it wasn't for the mention of Safari, I would wonder if he was actually using Mac OS X instead of Mac OS 9. Then again, he never actually said he used Safari, just that Apple was 'desperate' for developing it.

It doesn't seem to matter to him that there are plenty of browsers out there for the Mac including Mozilla (Netscape), Internet Explorer, OmniWeb, Opera, and more. He just theorizes that the fact that Apple is developing it's own software means that if Apple didn't make it's own software, the platform would be dead.

I guess that means Microsoft must also be desperate since it makes Internet Explorer for it's Windows Operating Systems. They must be really desperate with that Office suite for business and Outlook for mail.

If Microsoft makes an application, it's a good business move. If Apple makes an application, they're desperate. Great reasoning there.

So he also theorizes that 3rd parties don't care about the Mac since he can't get his Palm Software to work. There are many forms of user error here- is the software the latest version, is the system software up to date, or is he using an older version of the software running in Classic? We don't know.

He also doesn't seem to understand that Apple's own iSync software works with the Palm. But it looks like the author didn't try and use this software either.

Apple bases it's earnings around computer sales. What a surprise that is. After all, it is a computer company. Of course the author conveniently forgets about the highly popular iPod which sold out everywhere last Christmas with no 5 GB iPods available for 2 months due to the high demand.

Apple tried to play the peripheral game like Dell is just starting to do and it didn't work. That's why you don't see any new LaserWriters, Apple branded Scanners, Apple cameras, or Newton Messagepads. Apple tried that market and decided that the best margins were in computers and displays. Who can argue that Apple's displays are some of the best out there, especially at their current price points?

It's also very convenient that the author looks at computer sales for a quarter where they were all due for an update.

The 1 GHz PowerBooks and iBooks just started to ship, the iMacs were long in the tooth, and Power Macs were also overdue for an update. Of course now that all have been updated fairly recently and all products are now either brand new or just half way through their product cycle (iBooks), maybe the author could update his information.

Finally, the author misses the point of the $150 million investment from Microsoft. Jobs decided that Microsoft's support was needed to get Apple back on it's feet so the company decided to settle it's decade long lawsuit against Microsoft's patent infringements for Microsoft's 5 year committment to Office, IE, and other Mac apps, including the $150 million in non voting stock as a vote of confidence in Apple.

With the Power PC 970 due in Macs later this year, I find it hard to believe any respectable journalist who has done their homework could predict that Apple is once again going to go under. If anything, the future of the company is brighter than it has been in years. Great things are on the horizon from Apple and I can't wait to see them.

Heck, Apples been dead for years.

It hasn't stopped them producing the most desirable hardware and best software on the face of the planet though.

As a Canadian I have to admit that it's such a shame to have National Post in our country.

NP is a very bad newspaper on everything....not just computer stuff. A lot of editorials in this paper are like child writings. No wonder why they are in bad shape.

If the "Apple is dead/dying/fading away" stories stop, should we be worried? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Yes, we all know they have been dead - stiff, smelly and very much 6 feet under...for ages now...hehe! that's why I just ordered a new dual 1.25 PMac... don't you just love these dead Macs?

Kinda gives new meaning to the old story from last year about that southern evangelist preacher guy calling Mac users Satanists

    This guy is SOOOO clueless

He's a pinhead. Obviously, since I've got so much invested in the Apple platform -- why would I have wasted my money all this time? I guess it's OK to call 3% of your readers stupid.

i think for a market share of 3% that its impressive how much press attention apple gets and the amount of influence they have. although people complain, apple gets ALOT of software developement, and i think that ist he most impressive.
