Pics of my new Server

Hey guys. Well I have finally gotten in my new IBM p630 AIX server in at work. Its got Dual 1ghz Power4 procs with 4gb of memory. Only two 36gb internal drives that are mirrored but I am hooking it up to the Shark next week for the other drives. Our Shark has only 5 terabytes total.

I realized my camera was in my backpack this morning and figured what the hell....maybe you guys would enjoy. Anywho I took some other shots of the datacenter. I also have two older H50's using the Power3 chips. This summer I am replacing another rs6000 and I might be able to talk the money peps into upgrading to Power4+ chips in the p630 and running multiple LPARS. Or whatever else may be out. Please power5 Please!!!

I fired this guy up today and man is it fast. I had some trouble creating an Etherchannel with the onboard nics but it was easy once I found the docs. Anyway, hope ya'll enjoy the pics!

IBM chips Rule!

WOW! Sometimes specs are a lot more fun than porn. Especially for someone like me (a Systems Admin).

What do you do for a living?

What would the above server be for?

How long did it take you to put it together?

BTW, I was though the following commandment:

Thous shall not run unnecessary risks.

Yes sometimes specs are more fun.

Im an AIX admin for a hospital. The new server is gonna replace an older RS6000 that acts as an Interface Engine between other systems (allows other systems to speak the same language..VAX, AS400, AIX, Windows).

It took me about a day to assemble it and rack it and all day today to configure. Not that bad though since I have done it many time with our test system.

The Dasani is mine. They ship it in for us by the crate so I always have one with me. Guess it's not the smartest thing to do but....gotta live on the wild side sometime.

Wow the 690 is awesome. I wish I could have gotten one of those, but it would be overkill.

BTW, what kind of data will be stored by the Sharky?

I am guessing you are a network administrator or oversee purchasing for a huge corporate client. A (over) one-ton server with 16 Power4 processor modules isn't a matter of wishing to have one...

sorry again!!! Didn't read your first post, Trailmaster -- guess a hospital would indeed be a place to have such a server (the redundancy of its architecture would alone make me feel safer )

All our new Intel servers share the Shark drives. File & Print, Exchange, SQL server, and web servers along with our new RS6000 servers. We load the OS on the internal drives, mirror them, and then load all App Data on the Shark drives for better management and backups.

Well I can only speak of what I know. The people that make the most money in my area are Oracle DBA's and Sys admins of some flavor of unix. Next would probably be Network Admins (lords of Cisco) and then App programmers. Then probably Wintel Admins and next Web designers. Hardware junkies are usually at the end. At least where I live. Again, this is just my area. I cannont speak of other areas.

But if I could do it all over again I would have gotten my degree in Electrical Engineering. All my buddies went this route in college and I went CS. EE qualifies you to do CS stuff and a lot more. Now most of them are working for large companies like ChevronTexaco and Entergy making more money than I. Just some food for thought.
