Apple's Introduction Practices - The 17" Powerbook

So yesterday there was an article on MacCentral about the delayed Powerbooks. Some interesting quotes:

[quote]"I don't know why this always happens, you would think they would get their supply chain lined up properly," IDC Senior Analyst Roger Kay, told MacCentral. "Frankly, their announcements are always exciting and there's a lot of buzz generated, but when people go out to buy, they can't get it."

and...

[quote]"They lose some of the punch -- you would think for Apple that's what it's all about," said Kay. "They can't compete on a level footing with the low-cost Wintel suppliers, so it has to be about being high-end, the great design and leading edge features, which is all there. But, they hurt themselves, particularly in the area of profitability, by not getting the full punch of revenue in the quarter of introduction."

Okay now it's one thing for Apple or any company for that matter to come across some glitches when manufacturing a new product but it almost feels like the 17" was in Alpha stage when it was announced. I really think that this thing wasn't anywhere NEAR close to being a finished product. January 7th it was announced...it's now March 6th and they will probably not be shipping in quantities until April.4 months? That is ridiculous and Jobs should answer to his shareholders about this at the next shareholders meeting.

Now before anyone comes screaming into this thread saying something like: "would you rather Apple release a product that has defects and makes Apple looks bad..." No I don't. I think Apple should announce products when they are ready to ship or at least ship within weeks of announcement...not weeks that equal MONTHS...weeks as in less than a month.

It's ridiculous.

Thoughts?

they wanted to announce the 12" and 17" PBs on the same day so they could run the Yao ad... IMHO it was effective... its too bad the 17"ers are still not shipping...but what you gonna do? they wanted to release it at MW...

they had the first ad with Yao... and they got a lot of press for it... if they wait on that ad, they look like copycats...

    It is definitely ridiculous.

Give me a break. Pumping product you can't possibly get for months and months is sh!tty, verging on fraud. Who cares what they *wanted*? They didn't have the product.

My friend who is a West Coast Director for a Specialist got an email from Apple today saying that 17's would not ship till the 27th. This can change but the fact that they are confident enough to send an email to a specialist about it speaks volumes of the problems they are having with this product.

I am almost scared to buy into v.1

There was a lot announced that day that wasn't ready. Apple were under a lot of pressure to produce ( not least from us ) and had nothing on the processor front so we were given what they had, ready or not. Still it worked for me. I thought it was a great show. Difficult call for Jobs I reckon.
