Using Resound Smart 3D app with Apple watch

I am really impressed with how Apple Watch can control my hearing aids with the Resound Smart 3D app, but it only works when my phone is switched on and the the App is running on my phone. If the phone times out, as I would expect it to in say a theatre, the watch function is worthless just when it would be most useful.
Is there any settings that I can use to change this or does it need a change in the app or a modification to the iOS?
A positive reply would be a life changer for me.

I have the same issue. The Resound Smart 3D app for my Apple Watch 4 only seems to work when the app is also running and active on my iPhone XS Max. It disconnects and says, “There is a problem with the connection” as soon as the phone goes to sleep even if the Resound app was still running on the phone. I can’t believe it can only work when the phone is on and the app is running in foreground as it defeats the whole purpose of the app for the watch. I’ve tried adjusting and changing every setting, but nothing helps. Any solution would be appreciated.

UPDATE: After 13.2,  the Resound app for iPhone and Apple Watch now seems to work all of the time: only got this working recently, so too soon to be sure, but I am cautiously optimistic.

After I installed 13.2, many apps were not working well or at all until I did a forced restart. Since that restart, the Resound app for iPhone is much faster than it has ever been on this phone or the one I had before. I'm now wondering if some of the poor performance of  Resound apps is at least partly because of bugs or issues in iOS?

To get the new Apple Watch "Hearing Device" complication to appear finally on my watch face (and work), I also had the phone first "forget" my hearing aids (Resound LiNX 3D from Costco,) then pair them again. I also tried some other things which may have helped, but it was a forced restart of both the iPhone and the Watch that seemed to be the last necessary step. (Because the Resound app seemed so unreliable on the Watch, I wanted to try Apple's new built-in one for Watch. Now that the Resound app for Watch is more reliable than before, I can try them both.)

My hearing loss is severe to profound. Having hearing aids beeping erratically and repeatedly, the sound cutting in and out randomly or any time I do anything on the phone, taking a long time to adjust, and so on affects the quality of lives on an existential level. I am genuinely grateful to Apple and Resound for finally getting their stuff playing well together.
