How can I move my cursor to the spot where my finger is, without having to find the current cursor position and drag it to my desired destination?

I'm sorry - I forgot to add an essential addition to that question (but couldn't edit the original post):
How can I move my cursor to the spot where my finger is, without having to find the current cursor position and drag it to my desired destination,
when the entire sentence is already selected?
For example in the browser search bar, if I tap the entire bar gets selected. It's very hard to 'unselect' it and move the cursor to the right spot. In iOS 12 the magnifying glass when tap-and-holding was great because it allowed me to directly move the cursor, despite being selected or unselected.
