iOS 13 is out and exactly how good these iPhone cameras are, on the AppleInsider Podcast

in General Discussion
This week on the AppleInsider Podcast, Victor and special guest Charlie Chapman talk about the release of iOS 13, 13.1 betas, and the whole strange saga of this beta season. (Don't install iOS 13.0 unless you have a Series 5 Apple Watch.) We also talk about whether Disney and Apple could really have merged under Steve Jobs.

iOS 13

AppleInsider editor Victor Marks and iOS developer Charlie Chapman discuss:

  • iOS 13 is out, and there's a new 13.1 beta. But iPadOS isn't coming for days, and nor is tvOS. What's going on at Apple?
  • Is it a good idea to wait until iOS 13.1 is released in a few days? Spoiler: yes.
  • Apple's recycling efforts appear to be working, rare earth minerals are being recycled for use in the Taptic Engine
  • Disney's Bob Iger has a book out, and he comments that he regularly imagines 'what would Steve say' conversations, and muses about what could have happened if Apple and Disney had merged
  • Is there more RAM in the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max that's solely dedicated to the camera?
  • Don't just stick to Apple's Camera app -- there are superb third-party alternatives such as Halide, Spectre, and Hyperlapse
  • Austin Mann's iPhone Pro camera review is out, and the photography is spectacular
  • Filmic Pro's CTO mentions that the A13 bionic is unlike any other embedded processor, and that thermal management is what lets them use all four cameras at the same time
  • Apple VP of communications, Steve Dowling, resigns. Who will fill that role next?

iOS 13 is a disaster on my iPhone X. Wish I never installed it. Safari behaves erratically, some times screen is unresponsive then comes to life again. iPhone has been pocket dialing daily, don't know how it is triggering. Some apps behaving oddly

you could probably roll back to a 12.1.4 backup, but if you can stand it, you can wait two days for the 24th to see if 13.1 helps.

    Victor,

On the podcast you said, that all iOS devices possible homepod as well had to be on iOS 13 for reminder to work, is the same true for mac, does the mac need to be on Catalina for reminder to sync properly across devices. As you pointed out, when it comes to cloud service many times you have to be on the latest operating system not to have issue.

We saw the same thing with iOS 12 and books all devices has to be on iOS 12 and the Mac on Mojave in order to sync books. Apple never made this clear and people had issue when they updated to iOS 12.

On a different topic, your comment on recycling was not 100% accurate. Apple is not themselves recycling rear earth metals, yes they maybe breaking the phone into its major pieces but they are then selling the parts to companies who recycle. There is no way to be 100% sure the new product which use 100% recycle AL or rear earth metals the recycle metal came from Apple products. in the case of rear earth metals, it cheaper today to use recycle since rear earth metals are on the raise again since China is the largest miner of those elements and they have been jacking up the pricing.

I apologize for not being 100% accurate - but I think I got this part correct. I said that Apple is working with 3rd parties to use recycled rare earth metals, and separately has used their own robots to disassemble iPhones for recycling.

Right now, there's some difficulty with Reminders and the database location, where if you create a reminder on iPhone iOS 13, it will not be able to sync to Mac Reminders. Once the version mismatch gets sorted out things should return to being fine. I have noticed that if I create a reminder on Mac Mojave, the reminder -does- appear on iOS 13 on iPhone.

Did they fix the bug (in any of iOS 13’s multiple releases already) where a Bluetooth play command issued (by, for example, your car) will cause music to be downloaded from your iTunes account via cellular data when you DON’T have music on your device and you have ALL relevant settings switched to NOT download music?
