ibooks eol'd?
OK I just came back from CompUSA where I was helping my aunt 'switch,' she was going to get the 14" iBook Combo Drive model and so we asked the guy to see if they had one, he left for a few minutes and came back with a strange look and said "um, we don't have any in stock, in fact none of our 200 + stores have any."
Now this is curious to me, I haven't heard any rumblings about an ibook update, only powermac or display. If new ibooks are coming next month, i dont rembmer it being usual protocol that they go EOL 3 weeks in advance???
What do you think? Do any of you have any connections so that you can check if this guy doesnt know what he's talking about or it is EOL?

I dunno about EOL policy, but I can personally testify to CompUSA's "not having thier poo together" policy.
CompUSA makes sure that no employees in their organization have thier poo together, at any time. If an employee, especially one in management or ordering, has thier poo toghether, they are summarily executed or transferred to the new Best Buy in Greenland. Take your pick.
If you have no luck with CompUSA, you may find some more help at a retailer with a slightly less stringent "no poo together" policy. MacAdam and the Rosai Group in SF both have a record of having thier poo together pretty much all the time. So do some online retailers. For that matter, ordering direct from apple ahs tended to be pretty pleasant of an experience for me.
in conclusion, CompUSA should be EOL'd
the numbers are similar to powerbooks in stock...
Don't even think about ASKING them about Macs, they just don't know. I started asking about an iBook once and the Chump salesman told me that I'd be better off with a Dell laptop. "But I'm a mac user, I've got all Mac software" I said, but the salesman told me that "We can take care of that".
Apple pours a ton of cash into the San Francisco flagship CompUSA, and the salesmen there are, on average, usually incapable of turning a mac on. I know this, as I used to be a mac tech at that very store. I'm not proud of it, and I'm glad to say I left that job as soon as possible, but i got to know how Comp works from the inside out.
Fact of the matter is, they wouldn't know a good computer if it bit them on the solar plexus. All CompUSA sales want to do is sell you a WARRANTY. The whole commision program at the comp stores is based on how many extented warranties a salesman can sell. They make more money selling compaqs and HPs because they BREAK more often, and Apples come with their own perfectly good warranty.
I suggest you go to an apple retail specialist. There are a ton of them, most of them employ perfectly competent technicians and consultants, and provide more service and support than CompUSA ever will. If you need some reccommendations i can name off a few for the nothern cal and northern nevada region.
SF :
Rosai Group (pro consulting specialty, good retail)
MacAdam (retail specialty, decent repair shop)
Reno:
ComputerBase (suprisingly decent Retail and Consultants for this far up in the sticks.)

1) FREEZE ALL MACS. He just forgot the other rules:
2) remove at least 2 or 3 keys so all the keyboards look cheap.
3) NEVER let anyone compare the silent glory of Apple keyboards to all the other junk.
4) Tell everyone that the Mac really isn't any good. What they really need is a Sony....
<Woman carting software> This is all Mac software.
<software salesperson> Oh, make sure you put it in the PC section then. *snicker*
