Because a few members used to abuse that priviledge, IIRC.

Well known people changed their user names confusing everyone.
For example, starfleetX changed his name to Brad. Everyone liked starfleetX, but no one likes Brad.
So do you see why you shouldn't be able to change your user name?

Exactly. Wouldn't it be confusing for, say, "Powerdoc" to become "Crouzet"? Or for "Fran411" to become...
"Fran"
