New PowerMacs on August 13? Why not Seybold?

I really don't think we'll see new PowerMacs on August 13. No special event has been slated for that date and Seybold is around the corner.

Couldn't new PowerMacs be announced there like the original G4 was back in 99? Does this make sense to anyone else?

I say no new PowerMacs until Sept. 9.

i think apple only gave a weeks notice for the last special event.

Timing is everything. Apple has only 5% market share, but they do get more than 5% of the computer world coverage. Apple is spreading out thier product announcements over the year, instead of every six months at macworld. They simply get more press (and usually good press), and that's good. I wouldn't be surprised if new powermacs are anounced on the 13th, then jaguar ships on the 24th (but not the new powermacs) and then seybold rolls around and guess what? Powermacs ship now.

if apple was releasing the new powermacs at seybold, they would have the promotion for a discount on a cinema display and a powermac together run up until seybold. why end the promotion when you have more time to try and clear out inventory.

    that would be dumb business.

new powermacs on or very close to aug 13th

Well, in the spirit of pointless bickering (about 90% of what this site is about ), it is possible that Apple feels that by Aug. 13, it will have it's channels sufficiently cleared so as to sell out the remaining units by Seybold (or whenever the new units are announced). Or, they may have another, more aggressive promo ready to start on the 14th to really clear things out by Sept. 9 (or whenever). August 13 or thereabouts is a very likely date for announcing new machines, but it is not a certainty by a long ways. Let's keep our fingers crossed, anyway.

Whether the new PowerMacs are released on Aug 13th, Aug 24th, or Sept 9th, is probably dependant on how well the Crystal Clear Savings promo goes. if they clear out enough inventory by the 6th of Aug, they'll announce the new G4 on the 13th, otherwise they'll announce a new event to last until the 24th/Sept 9th.

So GO OUT AND BUY SOME POWER MACS!!!!! FAST!!!! So, i can order a new on on the 14th

Should Apple try to get rid of its inventory before announcing the new Powermac? I think not. From a reseller I heard that the pro-market is not buying anything right now, because they are waiting for new hardware (and Quark). Discounting the current line to clear inventories would take too long. A better option is to discount the old powermacs and position the new ones much higher. In this scenario Apple could announce the new powermacs as soon as they are ready.

If they decide they they haven't cleared enough inventory to announce on the 13th, they can easily extend the promotion a couple weeks or even a month if they want.

But the online calendar for the Flint Center in Cupertino isn't available for August... very unusual.

Here's my theory as to why new PowerMacs will debut at around Aug 13th: <a href="http://www.quakecon.org"; target="_blank">QuakeCon.</a>

Apple has had a large presence at past QuakeCon conventions in order to show the gaming capabilities of thier full line of PowerMacs (about a dozen or two systems in their booth) and displays to the thousands of gamers that attend; I believe Apple will be there again this year.

The convention starts on the 15th of August and ends on the 18th, with an early setup day on the 14th for BYOC attendees and is held in Mesquite, Texas. I think it would severely degrade their image of being any sort of reasonable gaming platform and be very embarasing if they show-off 7 month-old PowerMacs that are hardly competitive with PC offerings in their booth. So I think there's a good possibility that Apple will have some new computers announced and at the convention by then.

Of course, other possibilities for what Apple may do for QuakeCon is not have any machines to show there at all, or they might actually display the current models (I think not having any there at all would be better than doing that; its better not to have all of those PC users pointing and laughing at Apple's demo machines.)

True, this doesn't prove that Apple will actually release new PowerMacs before QuakeCon, but I believe that it does help solidify the possibility some more, IMO. If Apple can release fast, new PowerMacs in time, Apple will have a good (better?) opportunity to change some PC gamers' misconceptions about the Mac.

(I'll be attending again this year, but I was hoping to bring a nice, new PowerMac with me this year, but, unfortunately, Apple didn't announce new PowerMacs at MWNY like I hoped they would. I guess I'll be bringing my old PC again. )

You make a very good point, but I wonder if Apple is as wise as you are.

This could also be tied into their "switch" campaign.

"I used to use a PC for gaming, but I wanted an edge, so I bought a PowerMac, and I was amazed at much faster it was. I got better frames and experienced fewer slowdowns. No one stands a chance against me. I'm John Smith and I'm a gamer."

how do we go from powermacg4 discussion to the switch campaign in so few posts...

go by what you know first, apple has a promotion, end of promotion, new upgrades, typical apple, don't think they ever strayed from this path, look at Aug 13th for something, or maybe the promotion will continue, crystal clear started the day the one (similar) before it ended, extending the powermac release, special apple press event is written all over this.

Like the quicksilver (from memory) updates, where orders for Digital Audio Power Macs were converted to orders to Quicksilvers.

If you get to order them as soon as next week, that seems like an indication of shipping when announced.

Apple has backed away from Seybold in a significant way. They don't want to deal with Seybold on the east coast and the last really significant announcement they made at Seybold was the Power Mac G4s. Other than that, it's been quiet at Seybold for a while.

Last year would have been Apple Expo's show, I believe, had it not been for September 11. I think that we'll see the new Power Macs within the next 2 weeks.
