October/November: New Portables. G4 iBooks?

Time for a brief history lesson:

January 2001: 500MHz G4 PowerBook

May 2001: 500MHz G3 iBook

October 2001: 667MHz G4 PowerBook

October 2001: 600MHz G3 iBook

November 2001: Combo-drive PowerBook

January 2002: 14" iBook

April 2002: 800MHz G4 PowerBook

April 2002: 700MHz G3 iBook

If current trends continue, we can expect new portables in October/November. PowerBooks will likely hit 1GHz. 1GHz+ if a sutable replacement for the 7455 can be found. 7470??? I'll get to that in a second, but here's my best guess:

1GHz or 800MHz PowerPC G4 (Motorola PPC7455)

2MB L3 & 256K L2 cache

133MHz system bus

512MB or 256MB SDRAM memory

60GB or 40GB Ultra ATA drive

SuperDrive

ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 w/64MB DDR video memory

Bluetooth

AirPort Included (All Models)

Obvisously I'm betting the next PowerBooks will retain the existing enclosure. Nothing wild either like dual processors (That will come with new case) or DDR memory (With a 7455, why bother?) Now for the iBooks:

800MHz or 700MHz PowerPC G3 (IBM PPC750FX)

512K L2 cache

100MHz System bus

256MB SDRAM memory (Expandable to 768MB)

40GB or 30GB Ultra ATA drive

Combo Drive or CD-ROM

ATI Mobility Radeon w/16MB DDR video memory

Bluetooth

AirPort ready

Nothing too new with the iBooks either. Still 12" and 14" models. Bluetooth and maximum RAM now 768MB because all models come soddered with 256MB instead of 128MB. No G4 though.

Now I admit I'm pretty conservative with my guesses, but now it's time to get a little crazy. This thread wouldn't be AI unless I included the standard "will never happen" (WNH) guess, so here it is:

PowerBook G4 (Code name: WNH)

1.25GHz or 1GHz PowerPC G4 (Motorola PPC7470)

2MB L3 & 512K L2 cache

166MHz system bus

1GB or 512MB SDRAM memory @ 166MHz (SDR RAM people! SDR)

60GB or 40GB Ultra ATA drive

SuperDrive

ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 w/64MB DDR video memory

Bluetooth

AirPort Included (All Models)

Okay! It's not the most wild guess, I agree. If I make it just a bit believable, maybe you lemmings will buy it, and once the actual product hit, you'll all be disappointed because of ME!!! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

iBook (G4) (Code name: PowerBook G4 DVI)

800MHz or 667MHz PowerPC G4 (Motorola PPC7455)

1MB L3 & 256K L2 cache

133MHz System bus

512MB or 256MB SDRAM memory (Expandable to 768MB)

40GB or 30GB Ultra ATA drive

Combo Drive (All Models)

ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 w/32MB DDR video memory

Bluetooth

AirPort ready

Too much like a rev D. TiBook? Okay, this?

iBook (G3) (Slogan: The Power to Burn DVDs and Titanium)

1GHz or 800MHz PowerPC G3 (IBM PPC750FX)

512K L2 cache

200MHz System bus <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

256MB DDR SDRAM memory @ 200MHz (PC2100 underclocked)

40GB or 30GB Ultra ATA drive

SuperDrive or Combo Drive

ATI Mobility Radeon w/16MB DDR video memory

Bluetooth

AirPort ready

So there you have it. Apple's new portable speed champ, the G3 iBook!! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

But back to reality, 1GHz TiBooks and 800MHz G3 iBooks (No 200MHz FSB). That's what we'll see. Sorry. I stopped believing.
