Apple Mail vs. Gmail

I hope someone can hep me. After installing mac OS 11.5.1 Gmail won't authenticate my Gmail user name or password when Mail tries to get mail. iOS and via browser work using the same credentials. What's up? Does macOS 11.5.2 address this? Thank you.

    Likely a Gmail cookie issue. Try restarting your Mac.

    Good idea, Juan, but I tried that twice and no joy.

    Found out the Mail app is on a "less secure app" list. Will try to find out why.
