iPhone calls not going through car speakers when using Carplay

My iPhone 11 does put music and GPS through the car speakers when connected to carplay.  However, it puts phone calls through the phone speakers and not the car speakers.

My wife's iPhone 11 puts everything through the car speakers when connected to carplay, including phone calls.

So it seems clear that this is an iPhone issue rather than a car issue.  

My phone worked fine on my previous car, which did not have carplay, but it put phone calls through the car speakers when connected by bluetooth or hardwire.  So I'm thinking it's an issue with a setting rather than hardware.

So far, Apple and Hyundai each told me it's a problem with the other.  If you're up for this challenge, please advise.

I finally figured it out.  I went to settings/accessibility/touch/call audio routing.  I had set it to speaker.  When I reset it to automatic, all was well.

I'm surprised that the guy who took my call at Apple support didn't at least ask me to check that out.  Instead, he said it must be the car.  Well, my wife's phone worked fine with the car.  Comparing how our phones acted led to the fix.

Carl: I wanted to say thank you for this post in 2021.  I have had this problem for a week and did everything I could think of, but to no avail. Started searching and found your "I finally figured out". Went to my Iphone 13 pro max, IOS 17.3.1 (new upgrade) did as you described and works like a champ!!  thanks again...john..
