ARM-Jazelle-SIMD-Thumb, EPOC, G5

Could we find some ARM Ltd (co-funded by Apple, <a href="http://www.arm.com"; target="_blank">http://www.arm.com</a>;) technologies (Jazelle, SIMD,...) in next macs ? Do you notice their motto : Architecture for the digital world (remember me something but what...oohhh yes... digital life ). The Jazelle technology and the Macinstosh the best platform for Java. SIMD and digital audio and video.

Could we also find the EPOC technology in next macs (<a href="http://www.kingston.com/press/2002/memory/prm0207a.asp"; target="_blank">http://www.kingston.com/</a>;) ?

My last point is the G5 (next chip) is coming don't know if it's next week or at Apple Expo Paris and I think it will be at 1.6 1.8 or 2.0 GHz (2.5 GHz tested).

Why am I saying that ?

- <a href="http://www.macworld.com/2000/01/news/motorola.html"; target="_blank">2 years ago news</a>

- new cooling system discussed here

- no new PMac at MNWY02 (they will be equipped with G4 7470 1.4 GHZ only) - 3 GHz Pentium and 2.8 Athlon coming end of year (4 months)

- <a href="http://www.motorola.com/mediacenter/news/detail/1,1958,1604_1252_23,00.html"; target="_blank">Motorola & TMSC</a>

- newcIBM foundry

If Apple will release a major revision like a next generatio powermac, he will do in a big event like MWSF, not in august. Nor Paris.

No G5 soon, but you can always dream.

I'd have to disagree. Apple has publicly commented that they want to get away from the 6 month time table and have more announcements throughout the year. I don't think they'd want to sit on a new generation for several months. Just holding on to it defeats the purpose of having it. They need to boost sales and begin to generate revenue as well as recouping their R&D dollars right now.

They definitely want to make a big deal out of it, but you can do that with a big press event just as well. Plus, this is a critical time of year, back to school sales are *huge* for Apple.

Further, while not directly business related, Apple has been making all sorts of moves in the industry lately. It could almost read like a novel. One purchase after another, building on the ones before it. The Xserve introduction. Jaguar. IBM intros a new fab, then a CPU...it could be leading to some sort of climax. SJ is to much of a showman to not want everyone to say, "Ooooo!"

    er...sorry, got carried away. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

And what will we have till the G5 (whatever it is) a 1.167 GHz G4, a 1.4 GHz G4 (with DDR...) ?

Not enough fast and I will not buy them.

SJ must announce something great before end of year otherwise pro line sales will be bad, very very bad... And sincerly, I don't think SJ wants the sales going bad (even if he sells a lot of iDevices, iApps, i/eMac, iBook and .Mac accounts)

answer in a couple of days.

And arguments like Steve needs a better chip because he sell less powermacs does not work : Apple do the best with what he has : if he has a new chip , he will use it, he has not , he will find a gadget to make an illusion of speed, like in the time we where stuck at 5OO mhz, it's at the time he make the dualie.

Apple has been selling off it's shares in ARM for quite a while. Their initial investment was for the Newton and you're going to see some of the same chips (albeit slower) in the Palm OS 5 devices in the next few months.

If Apple and ARM have something in the works, it would come after major ARM selloffs by Apple.

AFAIK Apple doens't have any stock left in ARM. They sold off everything in one of those quarters where they needed to cover some loss..

Yeah, there's really no doubt in my mind that Apple shoots for big splashes at the big events if it can get 'em, but like all breakthru's, you can't always count on them to happen when you want them to happen ... now of course, it depends on the size of the breakthru and how close it is to a major show, but I can't see even today's Apple sitting on the mother of all breakthru's for more than a month or so, just for the extra bang of a MWNY or a MWSF. They're more likely to want to get the thing out the door ASAP or at whatever medium sized event was already scheduled.

The new Mac's in the new week? Well, they may be a fair speed up, but when you're in the middle of a switch campaign with competing machines at 2.5Ghz, how can you really trumpet your new 1.4Ghz machines all that loudly?

Thus we'll probably see a "capaign" loud enough to be heard well enough by Mac heads, who will get excited, but not so expensive that any Wintel switchers will catch much wind of it.

I don't think Apple's really going to start blowing it's own horn terribly loud about it's tower hardware at least until Steve can do a Photoshop bakeoff with confidence again ... and that may be a while.
