Turn off external display when using USB C hub

Hi there, I have a usb c hub which I use when in hospital or hope to as it allows wired headphones and charging the iPad. However as it has a HDMI socket the iPad is insisting on displaying using it despite nothing plugged in. Is there a setting I’ve missed to tell it to stop this?
