But.. to answer your question: Reinstall 10.2, then find a 10.2.3 update.

I've also had problems with 10.2.4, such as losing ALL my preferences and bookmarks!

I've been having 10.2.4 woes lately too. Losing locations, preferences, unexplained program freezes...oog. I was about to wipe the whole damn thing and rebuild from scratch, but on a whim I ran Disk Utility and the 'Repair Permissions' stuff. All is well again. Weird.

Well, you can always do an "Archive and Install" of 10.2, and then run the combo upgrader to 10.2.3. This method usually captures most of my prefs.

I've been running 10.2.4 on my iBook for quite some time now without issues. I left my wife's TiBook and my G4PM at 10.2.3, just in case. If I wasn't so lazy, I would have upgrade those as well. Are you sure the Colonel Panic has to do with 10.2.4, and not because of General Randomness?

I'd better recommend installing a combined (10.2.x to 10.2.4) update first. If it (together with permissions repairs) doesn't help, then archive and downgrade.

Have you tried to reinstall 10.2.4 over 10.2.4? Sometimes this solves several problems. But if you are experiencing kernel panics, you might have problematic hardware somewhere. What gives the hardware test?

It is possible to have some internal component reaching, for some reason, the end of its life and causing kernel panics. I know this happens when the PMU progressively dies in powerbooks. But this is the worst case scenario. Otherwise, I don't think I can help you more to avoid reinstall completely your system.
